"As many of you have already heard, Gas Powered Games is now lead developer of Age of Empires Online. We figured you might have some questions about what this all means so I wanted to share a few thoughts on behalf of myself and the rest of the Age of Empires Online development team. "

Good, now I'm relieved :)
It's good to see them trained up.
And you guys (and girls) at Robot really deserve a creative break from the franchise, some of you might have worked on it for over a decade ;)
WTF is this ***? Sorry, I adored Dungeon Siege, but GPG recent output was not so stellar, and who would be better suited to create an Age game than Robot? Wow, this is a HUGE turn-off :(
As I said on the AOEO forums:
The big question for me now is:
Is anyone still around that worked on previous Age games?

I ask this also. :)

Rather unlikely, at least people who had a major impact. I guess that this is just a case of MS's goold old greed; GPG was probably 2% cheaper, so they thought "who needs the ppl that created this series". Will AoEO be the next Dungeon Siege, or the next Space Siege (shudder).
I also commented in the forums about com ravens post:
Most of the time the step parent doesn't care for the child as much as the real parent does.... and this is an ES/RE baby. Not that the step parent hates the kid... it's just that the real parent has blood in the game.
..............................................
I guess it's like seeing a kid go off to college.. they grow up and are out of your control.
I might be a little bit prejudice because I'm a big Robot Fan.... The good news is that Orcs Must Die! is a sweet game.
Lame.
If this was planned, why would it just be sprung on the community out of the blue?
Basically RE put the framework in place and GPG will flesh it out. I'd like to punch some people at MS in the head, starting with whoever let AOE3 go out the door as AoE3 and not a different game. This series has gone to crap after AoE2. I have incredibly low expectations now, and don't see this game being anything that I was looking for.
I also have my doubts about how much this was planned, considering that GPG only recently (in 2011) put K&G on hold to work on another game...
This means that, news will no longer be announced here, correct?
It's still up, so it should be. I hope it is! :<

If they don't kill the game due to lack of interest. I don't see much of a buzz for it.
News never really was announced here. Microsoft runs all of the community and marketing support for Age of Empires Online. What it does mean is that we'll likely phase this section out in terms of being an official support outlet. I'll likely archive it for people to still read through, but I don't want to give newcomers the wrong impression that we are an official support outlet for the game.
Whyyyyy J, why did you do this to us? We had such a nice cozy forum here :(
Well, the primary reasoning is this - We aren't supporting the game. That's up to MS' community team and GPG now. I'd hate to have people coming in here looking for support that we can't give, and have them leave with the mistaken impression that we ignore our community members. Make sense?
I am a fanboy, your puny reason and good arguments won't stop me^^
Yeah, it makes sense- but I was more referring to "why did you choose not to continue working on AoEO" :)
Our studio was created to work on original games. There's a lot of pent-up creative energy inside these walls. I think that if you give us a chance, you'll see that we're capable of making all kinds of fun games. :)
Fun games you say... what about GOOD games, ATTRACTIVE GAMES, STRATEGIC GAMES, MASTER PIECES, what about those types of games? Why does everyone wants 'FUN GAMES', why is the RTS genre so IGNORED!?!?!
AoE clearly had it all, but now...
From the very beginning i was one of those fans who was 99% sure AoEO will be a failure... but, in time, i've got converted, like an AoE2 unit after it had 5 monks converting it...... in time i tried to appreciate the hard work you did on the game, and, after hearing the AoEO theme, i was sure this will be an AoE game... but now, we are right where we started...
People believe the franchise will die again, but this time it will not die in glory, it will die in agony, in pain... in the hands of STRANGERS!
When people will play this game, they should not forget who really made it...........
I have this Signature from the day i made my account on this site, and it seems that now it really fits the sadness we all feel, or at least i feel...
Wait, so you don't like fun games? RTS games aren't fun for you?
I'm not sure why "fun" and all those other adjectives are mutually exclusive to you. For me, a game that looks great, challenges me, and keeps me excited the whole way through is a fun game.
From my whole comment that is the only thing you care about.... why don't you respond to my entire post, and answer to every phrase. Very nice job escaping the truth...
What makes you think GPG isn't capable of making something fun?
They have a lot of experience in the RTS genre, and their lead developer is a big fan of AoE.
.............................................................
I... don't... want... FUNNY GAMES!!!
And what makes me think they will fail, simple, NONE OF THE ORIGINAL AOE CREATORS WORK FOR THAT COMPANY!!!
Jesus, have you guys payed any attentions to my complains?
Do you play video games without enjoying them? Wow.
By the way, I only know 'complaints', and no 'complains'. : )
Okay, here's the issue. You're confusing the words Fun and Funny. Fun can be Funny, but saying a game is "fun" doesn't mean it has to be a "funny" game. I have all sorts of fun playing all kinds of games, even very serious games. Of all genres.
Is Orcs Must Die! funny? Yes, it is. Is it fun to play? Very. Your implication that a good game isn't fun, or that a fun game is somehow not a good game is really confusing, frankly.
But as for your questions being answered, you only asked one: "why is the RTS genre so IGNORED!?!?!"
To answer your question, I don't think that the RTS genre is ignored. There's some great RTS's out there. Is the genre as popular as it once was? Probably not right now. Sales and players of these games have dwindled from what they once were. But these things are cyclical. RTS will eventually come back around, but it will probably be something a bit different than old-school classic RTS games. The games industry is changing every day. The way people want to play games is changing every day. Technology is opening up all kinds of opportunities for new gameplay.
I think so, yes. Was there something else?
Ok, one more thing, you say that the RTS genre is not being ignored, then lets say made fun of...
C&C, once revolutionizing the gaming industry just like AoE, and now... C&C 4... i will loose all my respect for you if you say that game is ANY GOOD! In anyway possible that game is a superb fail.
It's... a good example actually, they've tried something different, really different, and they failed.....
Starcraft, also a magnificent game, delays it's release date for like, what, 5 years or more? And now after it had been released it's holding on, on us... people complaining the multiplayer is incomplete, and now the promised expansions might also be delayed for the next 5 years...
My next example would be AoE, ONE OF THE THIRD GREATEST STRATEGY FRANCHISES EVER, but we already know it's story, so...
New things are always good, yes, but... there needs to be a balance, sometimes progress needs to be slow... like a circus guy walking on a rope, he must be slow and steady to succeed.....
The RTS genre isn't so big as it once was, but it certainly isn't ignored.
Current RTS' who do well are DoW II and SC II for example. But in the last years there have been tons of good RTS', from the Settlers 7 to Anno 1404 to DoW. And C&C 4 didn't fail according to many people, I actually think they won as they tried something innovative.

True that! blame consoles developers care much more about consles because of the = MONEYZ MONEYZ I WANT MONEYZ!
PC gaming is not dying but many publishers do /care to pc and just turn around to consoles ;(

This was always in the plan. We've even had some GPG guys down to the studio to get them trained up as far back as last fall. When we opened RE, our goal was to work on our own original games. We announced Orcs Must Die! this morning, and will have more info on future games relatively soon ;)
