Tournament Signup
This thread is no longer needed, signups have been filled, matchups made, and the tournament scheduled. Head to the new thread if you're in the tourney: http://robotentertainment.com/forum/topic/64-Player-Tournament
Well right now in the league of robotentertainmentfans.com, they have a section for tourneys, for people to host their own and so forth. Also I guess, I will participate. If you need any help, I can provide some, but only a limited amount because I get to be very busy at times. Barely have time to make 4 moves a day, but I do it. Also as a recomendation, you should make the tourney cap 64, because 50 ppl won't divide down evenly to get a 1v1 match at the end. 64, however, is the next closest number that will.
Good idea, no games should last longer than a week. Ideally, they could be done within 5 days, however some people are busier than others. When you sign up, try to state how often you'll be able to make moves. A few times a day is better, as matches can finish in a few days and the rounds will go by faster.
And I decided to post the thread here as a larger population of players are likely to see it, however if someone should like to make a thread on robotentertainmentfans.com referring back to this page, then feel free to do so.
I honestly hadn't looked into how the number would divide down, I'll change it to 64 then. The more the merrier :)
: ), ok, right now I neeed to sleep, in the morning though I will post in the league about this tourney. will you have anywhere that you will be like posting updates for this tourney? like a website? or just here on RE?
I'll create a seperate thread after its underway here on RE to report who's playing who, who's been eliminated, etc.
I'm down for the tournament! Looking forward to it. =)
edit: im in the EST time zone.
If folks are expected to move at least once a day, whose fault is it that the game isnt done in a week? Games average 30 turns, and we have seen a 66 turn game in the League. So that is one issue. A second issue is what struture are you going to use to determine who advances -- head to head? One game? If so, how do you decide who gets to go first, which is an advantage?
Personally, with the League lifting the membership cap next week (our database is ready, subject to a test with our current members), I think you should run it there. We can help out with a prize, and the games can be rated, so that is 2 plusses. If you want to be more inclusive, I get that, but with respect to a tournament you want done in a reasonable amount of time, having the pool of players be those that are obviously comitted would really help. Our ratings also provide for a seeding structure, so that two folks that are like 12-2 dont have to play in Round 1 by chance.
Absolutely want in on this. And I think a week of playtesting the dwarves shall give enough info to make a decision on what team people want to use.
EDIT: Updating for the updated rules and such.
EST. I can make moves in the early morning and all through the night (I work 3rd shift). Already a league memeber. Can't wait.
cool sign me up

Just curious how does the league solve those questions like first move advantage, drawn out games etc?
Well the League hasnt held a tournament yet, and whoever acts as TD can set the rules. Pretty much the only required rule is that all of our games are rated, so games count for both a tournament and our rating system.
I organized a 40 man tournament hosted at Touch Arcade *before* setting up the League with Drvumad and H_ngm_n. Round 1 (completed) was a round robin of 8 groups of 5 players, so you play 4 games, one with each, top 2 on points from each group advanced. I set it up so that each person had 2 first and 2 seconds in their 4 games. In the event of a tie for second, whoever won the head to head match up advanced. It wasnt a perfect set up, as I didnt realize before hand that a 3 way tie for first was possible, and we did get that in one of the 8 groups. I amended the rule so that in a 3 way tie for first, all advance, and in a 3 way tie for 2nd in a group, only the top finisher advances. Round 2 was 4 groups of 4, play 2 games with each person, 1 go first, 1 go second, top finisher advances. 3 of the 4 round 2 groups are done. There was some minor grumbling that Round 2 was too many games at once.
I did not set a strict time control, which was arguably a mistake, but it did encourage some more casual players to participate.
The best thing I did, in my opinion, was go with the round robin format, as single elimination is kind of luck based. The top player in the League right now is 15-2. One of his losses was to a player with a negative record. I'm just guessing that he had a terrible deck layout.
Hey Reegan777, I'd like to participate too! I can't say I'll be able to put up much resisitance, but it sounds like fun! :) Sign me up!

One move a day is the minimum, it should be more than that as I'm assuming players participating in the tournament will be quite involved and play more than the average player. If it goes slightly longer than a week but it's nearing the end, I will determine if the player has any chance left at winning (example: one player has a fully upgraded knight, ninja, and cleric, while the other has one necromancer that isn't upgraded with 0 items in hand, the council player will be awarded the win). If the end is not in sight, then the player that hasn't been active shall be disqualified. So if your opponent makes ONLY one move a day every day, then the match will only be at 14 turns but it will be his fault, not yours. For either of these cases, take screenshots whenever possible to use as proof. If neither player has proof of the other being inactive or being in an impossible situation to win, then the match will be forced to result in a rematch and take another week.
I'd like to get the league involved as well, however I want to run it from this website as more players are likely to look here than on the league forums. I prefer the randomization of matches and first turn advantage. I want to do a single elimination bracket style to differientiate this tournament from the last, I think it'll work quite well. By the 3rd round or so it'll be the most advanced players left anyway. As for first turn advantage, football uses a coin toss, so I think a random decider can work well. Since we can't toss coins over the internet, I'll randomly generate a number between 1 and 100 and each player will guess as to what it is, the player that is closer will initiate the game and move first.
I will run it from this site by way of a different thread, for a weekly update of the new matchups and how they're progressing (players may not post pictures of matches that have not yet finished, doing so will result in DQ, however you may talk about who's winning/losing or if you're waiting for them to move, etc.). For the league, I can make it a requirement to sign up in the league before participating in the tournament and to report matches, however only if the membership cap will be lifted by then (since some players seeing this will not yet be registered in the league). Also, will the ranking system be automated by then? I personally haven't looked much at it yet as I haven't had the time to look and figure it out, so this might be a problem for more casual participants in the tournament. The wins will be reported every week, so if the system is automated we can simply enter the wins/losses ourselves to save the more casual players the hassle.
As far as helping with a prize, I can come up with a prize for the overall winner myself (I might even offer a few options as to what the player may want), so if the league would like to help me think of/purchase a 2nd place prize it'd be appreciated.
If you are including non-League members, it wont be a League tournament per se, but any two players that are both in the League can certainly agree that a tourney game will do double duty and be rated. But yes, our database will likely be tested this weekend on the existing membership. It seems to be done and working at this point.

Well that's what I meant by requiring players to sign up in the league in order to participate, with this requirement anyone who wasn't a member of the league before the tournament must become one in order to sign up, and that would also help with organizing the tournament as well. I'd simply like to "host" it here on official RE forums in order to allow a wider audience to hear about it and have a chance to participate. As long as the membership cap won't be in place, it should be no problem getting tournament participants to sign up for the league :)
Also, I count 9 sign ups so far (including my own), will you be entering the tournament Art?
Count me in :)
i'm game. sign me up
I would love to join...hope I'm not too late. I keep missing out on the fan league.
sounds like a blast, you can count me in.
We're at 13 now, there are still 51 slots available so we're far from filled up. Invite anyone you know that is serious about playing and tell them to come sign up here on the forums.
Just a reminder to everyone, if your HA username is different from your forum username then you should specifically state what your username is. Something else to keep in mind is the requirement to join the Hero Academy league once the cap is lifted. Joining the league will be necessary in order to participate in the tournament. For more information on the league, contact ArtNJ or search the forums for threads about it.
I've given some thought to the prize, and currently I plan on awarding both the overall winner and runner up with a Hero Academy T-Shirt. In addition to the shirt, the overall winner will also receive a $15 iTunes gift card. If you win, shipping information will be required in order to send the prizes.

I'm still a little burned out on the concept. I am at the unhappy point of having to deal with a forfeit/ajudication situation affecting who enters round 3 right now in my tourney. Plus, I dont think I'm consistent enough to win a tourney. I'm 7-2 in league play and think if I play my best I can give the top guys a run in any given game, but I do tend to have oversights.
Well the invitation is still open if you'd like to join, every so often I'll post how many entries there are so everyone can see how much space is left. 64 is something of a large number, so hopefully enough people will hear about it and join. It isn't likely for the dwarves to come out for at least a week since there has been no release date given for them, so at the least it's two weeks until the tournament will take place. That's plenty of time to find members.
Well, considering that your gonna get league members involved with this, more than likely at least 3/4 of the league members will want to join this, making that 75 right there. You should probably lift the cap to 128(double it) and make it one extra round. Since most people in this thread are(or will) most likely be replying to the first topic, and not read all the way down, you may want to update the orginal post with all the new rules and etc. Also for signups, you may want to create a better system instead of saying just your name. Like for example, you can have them fill out:
GameName:
TimeZone(this could be important when playing the bracket, because if they different timezone(completely different) then they would only get 1 move in a day for each):
How Often do you play:
And maybe make a bit of requirements to make seeding easier:
Like for example:
1. All members must be in the league.
2. All members must complete 5(or less, or more) ranked games in the league.(this will clarify the skill level)
And so on....
I'll think about what specifics to add and change it in a bit. I'll wait to double the limit until I see for sure that a lot of people will want to play, each round is a week so too many rounds could be a problem.
MLKeener..... I'm in
Eastern time
OK, also btw, do I have your permission to post this on the league forums to maybe get some ppl signing up there...?
WalruWiz, sign me up

Sure, just post a link back to here so that the sign ups won't be spread between two different threads.

I love a good competition, sign me up!
Also, from experience you may want to consider adding a timeframe for each round. I.E. No less than 1 move per day, games must be played in full within 1 week. Our TA.com tourney is finising week 3 tomorrow, and still stuck in round 2. We have a handful of stragglers holding the group up.
