Suggestions on sapper defense for Ca ...
Caldera is one of those levels that I haven't 5 skulled. Just never put the time into it.
How do you guys suggest dealing with the sappers? I've noticed that grinders don't work very well since they don't hug the corners tightly. I've tried scorchers + webs as well but it's not an elegant solution either due to other monsters activating them.
I may come up with my own strat regardless, but I'm curious how you all deal with them.

Caldera is Endless only. I figured out a strat that worked (expensive, but never had to worry about it).

I have 5-skulled it, although I can't remember the exact details of how I did it. I believe I placed barricades pretty close to the rift, between the statues and the pits, but I'm not entirely certain. Anyway, most of the monsters had a pretty long path before they got to the rift.
I believe I used crossbow, wind belt, polymorph ring, void walls, spring traps, brimstone, spore mushrooms, mana well, barricades and one last thing (maybe boom barrel dispenser?). I took out sappers using crossbow and wind belt, polymorphed the big bad enemies and had a last line defense of spore mushrooms just before the rift. I sent all the small and medium enemies into the void wall using the wind belt and the spring traps, producing skeletons every now and then. And I had brimstone in strategical places to take out sappers at first, and later on other enemies as well. Mana wells made me able to use the wind belt and polymorph ring quite frequently.
I hope this gives you some ideas.
You can do standard 1 grinder +1 barricade 2 (or 1.5) tiles behind setup since all barricades are near rift you can do it anywhere near enterances, and since halls are wide grinder will get only few other mobs.
I usually just build decoy barricades for this level and attempt to snipe sappers.

Agreed! I use this technique on the north and south entrances and then just plain old dummy barricades on the east and west, these 2 can also double as blocking off the bridges.
