Shaolin map
What if preference vetoing was limited to 1 team and/or 1 map? That should prevent exploits.
Wish I asked that.
Good idea Networker, but you could still have people that play Tribe vetoing the Dark Elves, which I dont approve of. I think I'll call a vote over at REF, almost no one will vote, then we'll make a rule, a few people will be unhappy, and life will go on.

If you caught my earlier post, I suggested a conditional allowance:
How about limiting the number of particular maps allowed for refusal - and like you said - it has to be declared a priori on a member's profile if they are going to refuse it? Kind of like Right-to-challenge has to be declared.
Or perhaps post a notice saying that a particular map or team is under Probationary Status due to clear balance concerns (or severely impacted play like DE Wraith) as documented on these forums or elsewhere? Affected matches have to be resigned in the 1st round with a message declating the probationary-opt-out and a sunsequent challenge has to be accepted on good sportsmanship.
How about that?
The only reason I wanted to exclude the Shaolin map, is because it isn't a nor al game. He who draws best tiles, and gets them first, wins. It's a silly map. And it also benefits dwarves far-far more than any other team. Only a dwarf player would want to keep the map, because you will win far more than 50/50 games. It's broken, clear and simple I should think. And I wanted to play some Shaolin league, and Shaolin get the least value from the speed tiles of any faction... Running a single Shaolin deep deprives you of your combo, it's just not the same as running a grenadier or chieftain...
the reason people are irate about tf2 is because you can't buy it if you are not on steam. I too was quite annoyed/disappointed/angry when I found out that I had to install steam, and buy it there just to get tf2. The motivations behind it were questionable because it created an uneven game. If steam just had custom skins for your guys, then I'd be fine with it, but a team you can't use... That was not very cool. And then the team is clearly over powered. I have no idea if that was intentional, but it forces you to use the team, or die to it. And thus I can understand why tf2 is listed as a problem for 3 league players.
Out of the four people who have out bans, all of them are for a reason. I listed this map, cause it is just retarded. And three others listed tf2 because of, I presume but can not of course confirm, ethical/moral reasons due to it not being on iOS. These bans are not random, nor are they geared to make me win. They are just there to make the league more about what it should be: fair even matches, equal representation of teams/players, and a measure of your ability to play.
it was annoying that because of the tribe change I had to stop playing tribe or suffer unending losses. But at least then I could switch to playing dwarves and tf2 more. It makes playing "random" not really a sane option right now. Is also become a far more predictable league because we have 6 teams but of them less than half are becoming much more common than the rest.
i do believe balance can be restored, and I look forward to that moment. Until then the game is definitely loosing me, balance is very crucial to sustaining a good game. I also think that once the balance is about right. Very little new changes will be required when new teams are added. It absolutely is possible to lock these 6 teams after perhaps 2 or 3 quick iterations of balance changes, and from that point on, to do balance changes only to the newer teams that are added and make the 6 existing teams the baseline. Look how close DE are to that point. (Council is naturally the baseline)
each team has a strength and a weakness, and you can tweak the new team to add unit-specific strengths/weaknesses to compliment the specific other teams it is either loosing to, or beating too often, when balancing a new team. But first there has to be a lot of stats and review time, game monitoring, and good analysis. :-)
Just had a dwarf mirror match on that map that was dizzying. I killed his rear crystal on like my third turn.
this map is broken when u play against dwarves, just like shoalin is broken wen u play against dwarves...SHOCKER
I have no problem playing against someone better than me and losing (or losing at all for that matter, even if it was my mistake!) but I tend to resign from the get go when I face a random match up with TF2 for the simple reason that I cannot select them unless I pay an extra $5 just to use them only on my laptop when I've already spent $10 on the iOS teams. It's stupid.
Here's an idea for the next patch: an option for your settings in random match-ups to not pair you up with TF2. That or just add TF2 to the iOS version.
Once you buy the tf team you can use them on your iOS device as well,it's not steam only playable.
if the crystal closest to the attack tile got bumped up to a large crystal i think it would balance the map out
So by the comments I'm reading it will be optional to vet TF2 and/or the shaolin map and that's it?
As for vetoing a team, it should be a firm no. If you are interested enough in the game as to join a competitive league, you should be someone who learns the match-ups and does your best to improve and learn. Yes it may not be very cool that tf2 isn't available to buy on ios, but its not that hard and costly to get, wait for an inevitable sale and get the team for 2.49 if you so chose. and you can sync up your teams to both platforms on the same account. I would rather have a small number of respectable players than many players who want to refuse to play a match-up they don't like, grow up.
For the Shaolin map I think that most match-ups are quite fair with a 3-AP start, and i strongly believe that random matches must be 3-AP start for this map. The way the speed boost tiles are so close to spawn(1-AP away from lower spawn) and they face each other where if you are on one the other is in reach in 1-AP of range 2 or more units and 2-AP from range 1 units. The map is far in the advantage of player 1 if they have 5-AP to start with. As for dwarves they do need some way of not being at advantage when on this map because of their racial trait of extra tile bonus. I think that arranging the speed boost tiles to not be right in front of each other and making it so the normal dwarves can't reach the attack boost tile from the speed boost would balance this map quite a bit.
Also has anyone else always wanted random matchmaking to be separated to find players who have the same starting AP? I can't think of why they wouldn't have starting AP a matchmaking reference in the first place
I think we might allow vetoing of TF2 for people that dont have ready access to it, and only for those people. Folks seem to be very against anything else.
I have to say, my Shaolin map games are interesting. Its a wacky map, and almost guaranteed to be unfair to someone with perfect play, but for ordinary mortals it seems there is generally a ton of strategy to be had. So I'm also backing off support for that as an exception.
Given that Robot have all but said that Hero Academy will be released on Apple soon, hopefully the TF2 thing might become a little less of an issue.
How so? I don't see anything that would indicate a balance fix yet
I'm not talking about balance. Art talked about people not having access to TF2, and I said this issue will be partially adressed by the upcoming release of HA on mac, which will allow mac users who don't have a PC to get TF2 too.

HA displayed the apple logo today...the day the patch came out. How does that mean HA is coming out on mac?

Check their latest status update ;) I didn't think it'd be this quick.

Here, for those like me who didn't know (at first) what they were talking about:

"Hero Academy
Hero Academy now supports SteamPlay with the new Mac version! If you're a Mac owner and have been waiting for the game, you can now purchase a Mac-specific version."
Why did they fix for mac before android? lol...
Does it require you to purchase again for Steam on Mac if you already bought it for Steam on PC?

Steam has always been "buy once play how you choose" so don't worry
Cool, good to know. Looking forward to trying this out on my Macbook, since my PC was too old to run Hero Academy on Steam.
I played against a high level opponent on this map recently and there couldn't be a clearer demonstration of how broken this map is. By his 2nd turn my opponent had a Sworded Necro in my base with Priestess support behind. The Necro ended up getting loads of easy kills and forced me to use key items before I could finally killstomp him - and all this in the first few turns of the match. To be trapped in my base after having only just deployed my first units is the most infuriating experience I've ever had with this game. I somehow managed to pull off a miracle comeback but that wasn't before pulling all of my hair out.
There is no doubt this map is completely broken and urgently needs to be changed.

Successfully scaled back my game count, resuming normal play. :)
I'll be back to helping train new players when school gets out. :)
