Profile gone
When I launched the game tonight, my profile was gone. Went straight to the profile creation screen.
I had just rebooted after installing Windows lastest updates batch (can't see how that'd be relevant, but hey, that's the only change on my machine). Maybe more relevant is the fact that Steam Cloud connection was unavailable (as were the leaderboards).
I created a new profile (as was suggested in another thread) . That profile is correctely saved (restarted the game several times to check it out)... but where ??
My Documents\Orcs must die does not contain anything apart from VideoSettings.xml.
Although I've never activated Steam Cloud sync, I went and checked those settings. Cloud sync was indeed unchecked in my general Steam settings, but checked (and greyed out) in OMD properties.
Cloud connection and Leaderboards being again available, I tried activating Cloud sync and trying again... old profile still gone.
I then deactivated cloud both in Steam general settings and OMD properties : still gone (obvious), but my new profile was still available while the My Documents\Orcs Must Die was still empty !
Oh, and yes, I'm logged as an admin.
So...
1) What happened to my profile ?
2) Where's my new profile saved ?
3) Provided 2) finds an answer, can I recreate my old profile through editing the new one (frankly, I don't feel like having to unlock everything again) ?
Done.
Thanks for looking into it.
I am having this problem. I have connected my steam account to a my robot account, all my achievements still exist and Steam is connected. I have not created another profile what will this do.
I was just talking to our test lead about this a bit. There was a strange bug early on that caused some profile progress to be lost, but that was actually fixed in our first patch and affected only a very tiny number of people.
Outside of that, we never had this happening again (until the recent influx of new players from the sales, and even then, it's a very small number of people, as far as we can tell). The patches should have fixed the original issue, assuming you've downloaded all the updates to the game. What could be causing this is connecting and disconnecting from Steam cloud. Somewhere in there it seems like Steam is getting confused about which profile info is authoritative and is nuking one in favor of the other. We can keep looking for this one and trying to repeat it, but I think there's a good chance that's what's going on. I imagine this could happen accidentally with a spotty internet connection, as well, if it was quietly connecting and disconnecting Steam and creating a confusion. Like I said, though, we'll keep looking for this.
Thanks for your reply, I actually disconnected myself from the steam cloud earlier when I had connection problems, when I read that I should verify my files I disconnected it thinking that it may be an issues, previously the verification had unblocked it and I left it disconnected with no steam community activity. I have tried this again and reconnected the cloud hoping it may make a difference. Now I have an issue with validation which I have asked for support from them, but it still does not have a profile for me. I have asked steam how to validate it, this error had occured without me connected to the steam cloud, it has had some sporadic connectivity issues.
If you can get connected reliably to the cloud, then your saves shouldn't ever have issues, but unfortuntaely if it overwrote a previous profile somehow, there's not a way to recover that.
There's definitely something fishy happening related to Steam Cloud.
Cloud synchronization is disabled in my steam settings (and had been so since way before I installed OMD). In the Updates tab under the properties of each of my games (including OMD) the Cloud checkbox is checked but greyed out, with a link below it pointing to steam settings and stating that I need to get there to reenable Steam Cloud for my account.
None of my games has any data saved on the cloud... except for OMD.
Seems like OMD ignored the general Steam settings which should have prevented it from using the cloud. There's most likely a bug there (whether on your part or Steam's).
I found where OMD saves my profiles : C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\61934900\102600\remote
I tried replacing the profiles.xml there with the version from my last system backup, to no avail : no profile available at start. Is there some kind of timestamp check ? That's worrying : does it mean we can't even protect ourselves from such a mishap by making backups of the profiles ?
The profiles.xml file seems encrypted, so I guess there's no editing my profile back...
So...
1) It seems OMD uses the cloud when it shouldn't.
2) Why aren't my profiles saved under My Documents/Orcs Must Die ?
3) Your save file tampering-proofing may be a tad OTT since it seems to prevent any backup strategy, which, as knightmt and I can unfortunately attest, are needed... :(
I am waiting for steam to tell me their side is okay. I can understand why scores might need to be stored remotely but not levels and achievements.
HELP. My profile is gone too! Achievements are OK and I linked my account here to my steam account
This is what happened
I exited the game then later on I started the game again and there was a "cannot connect to steam cloud" error. I clicked OK and my profile was GONE! At the time net connection was OK since I was downloading a file.
I then exited orcs must die and exited steam to sign up with this message board. Steam then did the usual syncing with cloud and as a delayed reaction seconds later I thought ohhhhhh crap! I think the steam cloud with my profile was overwritten
Havent played yet but upon opening the game, my old profile is gone but I have created a new profile with a new name
in the \Documents\Orcs Must Die directory, there is only one file, VideoSettings.xml
can you guys retrieve my profile please!?!?
Can we back up our save files?
This has happened to me too now, I was playing whilst Steam went down, not my connection.
I will add this is perfectly reasonable due to it being Christmas and their servers Im sure getting smashed.
I also, do not use Sync, I dont use it because I think its a stupid idea for reasons such as this. It really annoys me that my Steam settings would be overrun.
If I cant back up my files to prevent this from happening again, I will be removing this game from my library, and making sure to tell all the people I was reccomending this to, to not bother.
Im getting sick of wasting my time in games that go out of their way from allowing me to take prevention.
Deleted from my hdd, I wish I could remove it from my list along with Dead Island and a few other choice perps.
If this was a car I had bought, which worked 99% of the time but for 1% the tires blew off and the engine block exploded?
It would be against the law to sell it.
Moreover, it would make your company look stupid, and you would have trouble making future sales.
Frankly I dont see why it's different, this is a game breaking fault which seems to be something in regards to how you are saving the profiles and the safeguards/audit system you have in place within Cloud.
Blaming dodgy internet connections or Steam when I have a list of games that work perfectly fine and update nicely even during/after outages is not only insulting its bad business.
Im getting sick of being made to feel like a fool for being a loyal and good hearted gamer.
I've done a post around to warn of the lemon, but I really hope this is resolved, because I love your game and would like to buy more in the future.
For now, youve lost a customer, if I could return this(and I really wish this was possible to empower the user and make Steam and online retailers even stronger) I would, not because I dont want it but because this is becoming a standard that Im not comfortable with.
Im not writing this to warn people off, or start a flame war, I just refuse to simply support by being fanboy personally I think thats why Nintendo is in such a pickle.
I REALLY LOVE YOUR PRODUCT! I REALLY WANT TO BUY MORE! FIX YOUR SAVE SYSTEM!
I have the same problem here. I went to play Orcs Must Die!, and was taken straight to the account creation screen. I restarted Steam, verified game cache, all that, same problem. My connectivity has been fine, with no known issues. I noticed that the Steam Cloud said that only 54 bytes(!) was being used by OMD.
To say this is frustrating is putting it mildly. I've put ~27 hours in to the game, and had only *just* managed to get enough skulls to upgrade everything I like using. It was fun, but I have no desire to repeat it, especially when I no longer have trust in the save system!
My Steam profile is linked to my Robot account, with Steam Cloud enabled. I also have Backblaze running on my PC, so if there are any local files stored that might help with recovery, I have images of files that go back for several weeks if need be.
Please help me recover my profile. Your game is an absolute blast, but this missing save is disenheartening.
Thanks for your help.
Have you tried creating a new profile and then restarting. It may bring it back.
If you're looking for the location of the profiles on your hard drive it's in.
[Location you installed Steam to]\Userdate\[SteamID]\102600\remote and the file is called Profiles.xml
So on my machine it's D:\Steam\userdata\33656751\102600
Are you serious champ?
Did you read the posts?
Thanks for reiterating but maybe you could answer the damned questions.
Or go find someone that does.
If you think my candor is not appropriate Id say your half baked game brings it on in many people.
Especially when they feel flat out robbed.
No, a new profile did not fix it.
Turning cloud off(IT ALREADY WAS) does not change where its saved.
Can we back this up anyway?
If not, who exactly owns my game?
Is it you guys?
Do you own it? Because god knows I cant use it. Not if its just going to waste my time.
Can I have my money back? Because I frankly feel cheated. I mean you made the game, I bought it, it didnt work, I cant play it now.
That kinda entitles me to my money right?
Or a decent answer thats not just reiterating or choosing to blame peoples net connections.
Most here had issues during xmas outages.
Your system just sucks.
Because if I had of known your game was a broken piece of crap, like so much that has come out this year, I never would have bought it.
And I gotta tell you, when I COULD have bought a game that does work, IT SURE DOES MAKE ME FEEL SILLY!!!
I did read the post. I was just wondering if a restart immediately after creating the profile might bring it back.
I'm just a forum member trying to help. No need to take your anger out on me. Robot has been working hard to help anyone with problems. Robot posted recently that responses might be a little bit slower than usual because of the holiday. I'm sure they are backed up with requests because of the circumstances.
Sorry you had a bad experience with the profile stuff. It does suck to lose progress.
If you can't get the old one back...... you can dice and slice twice as nice again and become a better player.
Later, Kenny
If you're looking for the location of the profiles on your hard drive it's in.
[Location you installed Steam to]\Userdate\[SteamID]\102600\remote and the file is called Profiles.xml

Hey, thanks for this. Now that I knew where to look, I was able to recover my profile via my backblaze setup. Everything seems to be working fine. It may not have fixed the bug directly, but it still made my day! :)
Success!! Good to hear you got it back,
I wasnt actually referring to you but the Robot staff member, so please dont take any offence.
However my irritability is justified.
I purchased a game that randomly decided to delete my save file when Steam went out.
The game went to sync files, after displaying a pop up telling me what I was doing was okay and it would update accordingly.
And it deleted my progress.
My entire profile.
I asked several questions, and my ire was raised when reiterations of the same thing were posed.
My issue is that I didnt have steam cloud on.
Spent a fair deal of time in the game, which requires grinding to access its later content.
Now what? Im meant to enjoy the game all over again?
Maybe if I had no commitments outside of gaming, this would be something I would be able to consider. But as this is simply a holiday period for me and I have to prepare for the next year, work, study, and socialising... I do not have time for games that have such ridiculous pieces of game design as to hinder the player so much.
Im still unsure whether I can back this up as normal, or whether a 'backed up' version will be deleted upon next auditing of the steam cloud, making backing up redundant.
Im still unsure why after making certain my cloud was not activated, it still wont save where you initially said it would.
And Im still unsure why I have to explain myself to someone not experiencing the issue first hand, who is recycling the same info the mods have put up, and now is attacking me.
Because I dared to say I was unhappy with the product, and the responses from the team that had been presented.
Case in point, if this was a local store, who refused or 'couldnt' give me my cash for a product that simply didnt meet expectations, if it broke outside gauranteed or advertised expectations, or didnt work as sold, I can get my money back.
Not store credit, not something to equal value, just whatever I paid.
Thats the law here, due to our government not wanting consumers forced into stuff they dont want, and thus diversifying and strenghting a marketplace, an item returned is not essentially a sale lost so much as sales in other areas gained.
Why should someone who makes an inferior product, which doesnt meet those standards win the sale?
I think, it makes quite a bit of sense.
This sort of system also allows the business to grow and improve their product, as opposed to the old 'yes man' syndrome.
I wouldnt have to take you to court, I wouldnt have to hire a lawyer, Id make a request from you initially and then if we couldnt come to an arrangement Id call our Fair Trades Department and theyd force the store given my claim could be validated.
Personally, whilst I have a fear for the constriction of information on the net, I cant wait for the days when online retailers are held to account, as it is it weakens the entire industry through forcing consumers to run a gauntlet, and money going where it shouldnt.
So those are my issues, and I think that whilst its a bit of a rant, its dead on. Like I said earlier Ihave close to ten or so games now I just cant play. I have lost several lots of save files, something that the industry should have, and does in a lot of respects have down.
I dont have that kind of time to invest, and it really irks me when I feel like my hobby becomes a trap of some kind, and Im forced to feel spite for it.
BlueSuit -
I totally understand your frustration, but I also need you to try to understand that we're doing what we can to help with this issue, and being a jerk to our staff isn't going to help resolve the issue any faster. I assure you that we want you to be able to play the game problem-free as much as you want to be able to play it. I also ask that you understand that the profile issues we've encountered thus far might seem big on a given forum, but in reality they occur in a micro-fraction of our player base, and that makes it even more difficult to track down. Because of that, the more information you can give us, the better we'll be equipped to resolve the potential problem.
With that in mind, I'd like to get more information from you about exactly what happened with your profile. Forgive me if I've overlooked any details from above, but there's a lot there.
-
First of all, could you connect your Robot account to your Steam account so that we can see what profile details have been captured and preserved, if any? To do this, go to your profile and click on the Connections tab. From there, you can connect your Steam account to your account here, and your OMD! stats will show up on the website.
-
Could you please be more specific about what information has gone missing. Is your entire profile gone, or did you just lose your campaign progress while retaining all of your upgrades and achievements?
-
What were the exact circumstances in which you noticed the profile data missing? Was it on a fresh start up? Was it mid playthrough? Were you playing offline, then switched to online, then found no profile data in the game? Were you playing other games inbetween? Please give me as much information about the circumstances surrounding the lost data, specifially with regard to the last time you played WITH the data present, the first time you started up without the data, and whatever may have occurred in between.
-
Have you played on more than one computer at any point, or were you only playing on this single PC?
-
You mentioned playing in offline mode. How often do you switch between offline and online mode?
- If you're still frustrated enough that you do want a refund, you can contact Steam to ask for such within the boundaries set by their user guidelines. But it's entirely up to them. We don't handle the transaction part of the process, so we can't issue refunds directly.
If you can help me out by answering those questions, it will get me a lot closer to hopefully figuring out what exactly the problem is. As for save file location, it should be exactly where Dunkman said, albeit adjusted for your local computer. If it's not, then there's something beyond our control going on with your installation.
Mate, you might want to move to Australia and have some realigning of your sensitivity switch.
If you think people should act like peaches and cream when they are in actual fact irate, man I dont know what world youre living in.
Then you lecture me on it. If you had a store, I bet yu wouldnt be so bold.
Son, I bought your game, wanting to play it. I dont want to have to spend more wasted hours messing around, creating more logins, or helping you make your game bug free.
I didnt sign up for that.
I asked several simple questions, after outlining an almost exact experience to the first poster.
Very user friendly, very logical.
If you dont like criticism maybe you could do some kind of psych analysis on everyone joining your forum to make sure youve only got sycophants. The rest of the adults will stand over here and shake our heads, at what is becoming a lousy standard.
I found a solution on a Steam forum, seems some alternative versions save in a regular fashion, and can be backed up. You guys should check it out, might learn something.
If I hurt your feelings, or you thought my attitude was not agreeable, I would like to point out that this was in fact my intent, so please dont bother giving me a sermon on how I should be polite to a bunch of obstinant peeps such as yourselves.
I shant be returning to your forum, buying another of your products, or reccomending it to any of my friends.
Grats on taking an irate customer and upgrading it to a lifelong grudge.
Keep reachin for that rainbow guys.
I bet you're great fun at parties.

SixOkay- if it helps you track down the bug, when my profile disappeared, everything was gone but my Steam achievements. I'd already linked my Robot account with my Steam one, I've kept Cloud Sync on, and to my knowledge my internet connection hasn't had any hiccups.
I'd never played in offline mode (although I have, in the past, used offline mode on this machine, just not with OMD, and not with any game since I purchased OMD)
I'd played a few levels of nightmare, and quit to do some work. I re-launched OMD without rebooting my machine, there was a long pause, and the 'create an account' screen popped open. Nothing was saved, no upgrades, no levels complete, nada. When I went to the location Kenny posted earlier, it was completely empty, and Steam Sync reported 54 bytes in use.
Thankfully, as I mentioned before, I was able to use Backblaze and pull my old profile from a few days earlier. I copied it over, ran OMD, got the 'cloud and steam are out of sync, which one to use' message, chose the local version, and everything has worked fine since.
If there's anything else I can do to help you track down this bug, let me know.
Baeocystin - Could you send me your profile xml file to jkorthof@robotentertainment.com, please? The good one that you were able to get from your backup?
Honestly, we haven't encountered full profile losses since this most recent batch of sales on the Steam holiday sales. Previous incidents have been related to the early bug that we fixed. But If you send us that file, it may help us figure out what might have gone wrong.
Thanks!
Mate, you might want to move to Australia and have some realigning of your sensitivity switch.
....
Keep reachin for that rainbow guys.
All I can do is offer to help. If you don't want to meet me half way by giving me info about your specific experience, then there's not much I can do for you. Sorry we couldn't help.
Sure thing. Done.
Just so you guys know, I'm still trying to figure this out. There's virtually nothing about it that we can track on our end since the data for the profiles is getting cleared out entirely. This continues, unfortunately, to look like some kind of a problem with Steam and the overwhelming demand put on their cloud-save servers over the holidays. I'll let you know as I figure out more.
I realise that there has not been a post in this topic for several months, but this happend to me today too.
Achievements in Steam are still there, but when I start the game up, the 'create a profile screen' comes up.
Is there any progress on solving the problem yet and possibly getting my profile back?
Some additional info:
- I was playing the Lost Adventures, closed the game. Started the game up though Steam a few minutes later and my profile was gone. I didn't do anything with my computer in the time between.
- My achievements and leaderboard scores are still there.
- Cloud sync was working fine as far as I know, at least I didn't get a pop up saying something was wrong.
- I have never played offline or on a different PC.

Can you connect your steam profile to your robot account so we can take a look at your profile?
