I'd be shocked if the challenges were a major reason for not adjusting the damage output of more units. The Poisoner's debuff change drastically impacts damage -- isn't she involved in multiple challenges?

Yep, and the first Shaolin challenge was changed because of this (as well as multiple others, according to the patch notes).

Perhaps this is why we didn't get the Tribe Witch corpse explosion buff or Windblade splash damage buff that we requested, because it would require certain challenges to be reworked (although I would argue that, as much as I enjoyed the challenges, balance changes should take precedence).
I'd like to quote this for emphasis. If you're having trouble balancing multiplayer because it'd throw off your singleplayer, maybe you should've thought ahead and had the singleplayer unit stats saved separately.
Reminds me of how they couldn't include any DLC in the weekly challenges for OMD!2, because there was apparently no way to do so with the way they had coded it without locking out all weekly challenges to anyone who didn't own the DLC. Because "hey, maybe weekly challenges can be a way to advertise the DLC" is apparently something that no one at Robot thought of at any point.
