Orcs Must Die! 2 mac port possibility?
Hi, sorry if this has been asked a hundred times already - I very rarely come on these forums - but I was wondering if there is any possibilty Robot could port Orcs Must Die! 2 to mac (through the steam client for mac) ???
I think there would a lot of people out there like myself who have an xbox and would love to play OMD! 2 but only have a mac and no PC. So if Robot is greatly deterred by Microsoft's controll and ridiculous fees then could they not reach that same customer/fan base through a mac port of the game?
Mac haters - please stay off this thread unleass you have something usefull or reasonable to say on the matter.
No. I see what your getting at there... that does appear hypocritical at first glance. I think your misunderstanding my point. According to many articles I've read on the web, microsoft's xboxlive platform is too expensive and over-controlling for Indie devs although NOT AS BAD AS APPLE!!! haha But there is steam on mac so but I know the main issue for robot would be the time and cost to convert the game and test it.
(Whenever I discuss something mac related on forums I just get abused by morons so I always write that bit in just to warn people that I'm not going to lower myself to their meaningless tirades. :D )

You still seem pretty hypocritical, and not just at first glance. By choosing the words you're using, you're pretty much inviting people to discuss with you, rather than the opposite.
I can't answer your initial question, but maybe one of the developers can shed some light on this. If I were you, I wouldn't get my hopes up for a port to Mac, though.
Run Bootcamp on your Mac. Problem solved.
In all seriousness though Jeremy, of course we all agree that if they released a mac version it would sell and mac users would be happy. Though I doubt it has anything to do with xbox. Personally the quicker companies start to support linux ubuntu installs the better. I do not know much about the havoc engine but it might not be cross platform yet, if not it is a ton of work to make it so. So sure.. we all say.. "yeah of course. make a mac version and a linux version". I'm sure the robot guys have cross platform on there radar somewhere.. it is simply something that no game company has ever not considered and it is just not as simple as ticking "mac version" on the compiler like with unreal or unity or w/e. So while we all agree, we also say.. no point crying about it... bootcamp that *** and get in on the fun!
And in direct response: No I have not heard anything abotu a mac version. (or liniux!! long live teh penguin!!)
I had considered using bootcamp but it's a bit ridiculous to have to buy windows *just to play one game* haha... I don't play many games but I'm completely addicted to OMD 1 on xbox :D
It appears the havok/trinigy vision engine is currently being developed for iOS which is interesting. Apparently all havok's technologies are mac, iOS and linux compatible. But still, it would be a fair amount of work and testing on Robot's part and they are busy working on other stuff and new stuff.
Hey Six, are you allowed to say anything on the matter?? :D
You'll notice that OMD2 is not available on xbox, and propably never will be. Robot chose to go only with Steam on windows because that was where the significantly larger part of the market was.
Steam is making the move to linux with the new steam client and the valve engine. Although it'll probably take some time before gaming companies will move to it. The main issue being when you have a large codebase built using one engine, it's difficult to justify re-writing almost the whole thing just to get a few more customers. It might be something to consider for the next iteration of the franchise, if they decide to go in that direction. Robot is a small company with limited resources. On the other hand that also makes it easier for them to change direction quickly.
Bootcamp on your Mac would most likely mean you'd use Windows for all games (or should!). I agree with you though, it shouldn't be required for you to do that but that's life :/
Well well well... today steam had a -75% off sale on Orcs Must Die 2 !!!!!!!! I couldn't resist such a bargin so I've just bought the complete pack for $6.24 (US) instead of paying $24.99 (US)!!! BARGIN!!!
I can play on my brother's crappy PC thats falling to pieces when I see him next but he's addicted to SC2... hmmm such is life haha :p @ myself!
so maybe I will just have to boot camp it! :( anyone know how I can score windows 7 or 8 really cheap??? :D
(Steam's 75% off sale has about 5 hours left on the clock so hurry if you need too!!!)
You can purchase an OEM version of Windows 7 or 8 64 bit Professional for around $140 (Home Premium around $90). Read the OEM rules though if you decide to purchase a copy :)
But I think that you cannot get an OEM license without buying other components (CPU, RAM, mainboard, HDD). That's how it was when I got a license. You would have to read through newegg's or tigerdirect's agreement on OEM licenses.
Otherwise, you'll have to buy a retail copy.

We don't have plans for a Mac port of OMD2 at this time.
Also, that's a HUGE assumption that going to Mac would get us the same or larger audience than going to XBLA. Those are not necessarily the "same customer/fan base" at all. In fact, I'd anecdotally make the argument that it's very, very few people, as one device is Apple and the other is Microsoft, both of whose fans tend to be very single-platform minded.
What about linux!!
No plans currently.
Ok... question answered.
Lets just forget about OMD2 and the whole xbox thing and talk future steam/multi-platform support across windows, mac, linux and possibly even the rumoured 'steam os'... Are you (SixOkay) able to tell us if Robot has plans for multi platform support in upcoming and/or future projects?
