Losing causes menu/game to slow down

My problem only happens when I lose.  After losing, the game seems to drop to 1 FPS or less.  It takes the losing screen almost a minute to load, during this time all the animation happens, it is just super slow.  The sound appears to play as normal.  Once the options for Retry, Menu etc come up, the game speeds back up but is still slow.  I have to exit and reolad then everything is fine.
 
If I win there is no problem.  I know the obvious solution, stop losing!  Trying my hand at nightmare and can't win them all.
 
My basic specs are:
Core i7-920
6 gigs Ram
Nvidia GTX280 (latest drivers)
Win7 64
