Ideas for Add Ons
First, I'd like to say how much I love Hero Academy. It has single handedly turned my iPod touch from a mp3 player into a gaming device. I never found any games to have depth to them before this, but this game is truly amazing.
To the developers, I do have a few suggestions. Don't listen to the radical ideas such as adding more depth to the game, because it's honestly a perfect concept as it is. It's both simple yet hiighly complicated when playing competitive, which is exactly how games should be in my opinion.
Snce the game is already great at it's core, I suggest creating a large number of additional in app purchases and updates. Most companies developing apps don't put much work into them after release compared to how they should, and that would sadden me with this amazing game. I'm perfectly fine for paying for additional content in this game, as it's more like buying an expansion than buying more powerful units. Add ons in this game have the right idea, balanced, just a different way of playing. So, here are my personal ideas.
More teams. This is the main and most wanted add on. Of course the dark elves have already been released, and the dwarves are on the way, but I'd hope that it won't stop there. I'd like to see a total of at least between 6 and 10 teams once all is said and done. I have a few suggestions for somewhat practical teams to be added based on the setting, although they are mostly general ideas.
- Werewolves. I'd say vampires too (not the twilight kind) but Vampire playstyle (draining health) is already covered by dark elves. As for the werewolves, I was thinking that in general they would be in human form. To fit with their wolf side, they could be dressed in animal skins and look animalistic. They could be more akin to native americans to differentiate themselves from the council. The support power of the team would do no direct damage, but could transform all allied units onto the field into beast form.
- Orcs. This seems standard in a fantasy setting. The super unit could be an ogre or some other orc like being.
- Dragons, or dragon worshippers. It might just be me, but if something involves dragons, I'm buying it. They're also very common in fantasy games, so they would fit perfectly in place. It could either be an entire team of different forms of dragons, or a team of dragon worshippers with a dragon as the super unit. How exactly this would work I'm not sure, I just know that lots of gamers loveeeee dragons.
- Elves. Without the darkness. Elves tend to be great archers and close in touch with nature, so perhaps there could be something with that. The addition of dark elves makes me assume that regular elves should join in at some point.
- Technology based team. Not saying to add guns or anything like that. I'm thinking of a technology mixed with magic kind of thing. Swords can look futuristic and discharge energy (visual animation) when they attack. Units should have higher damage than normal but less defense.
New maps. Doesn't require much explanation. New maps and visual areas will make it seem like a lot is being added when it really isn't. It would also breath new life into the game for people who play a bit too much.
New game types. The crystal gameplay is great, but new game types could never hurt. These would likely be a bit steeper price, but adding in Protect the Leader, Capture the Flag, or simple Team Deathmatch could really help add to the games life.
This is the limit of my visions on improvement for now, though I'm constantly thinking up new things. Of course the developement team won't take all (or perhaps any) of my suggestions, but I truly hope that it does at least make them think. These additions would definitely make this a permanent new game for us to play.
If you have any additional ideas for the games improvement, state them here. Please no rash or crazy ideas, I'd like this thread to be noted and considered by the developers when creating new content.
Yes, that's what I was thinking with the technology team, some sort of Gnome or other mechanically advanced race. Infusing the technology with magic is very commonly seen in fantasy settings. Golems are basically robots designed with magic, so they could be a plausible super unit
Did you see this post? http://www.robotentertainment.com/forum/topic/Lycan-Werewolf-Heroic-Team
I wholeheartedly agree with more game types. I would LOVE team death match, capture the flag etc. I would alsoLOVE more maps! Maybe one where the crystals are in the corners and spawn points in the middle? Or one where every tile is some kind of boost tile. Tons of possibilities with maps!
I honestly don't think we'll be seeing zombies. The same idea with vampires. You have to look from a gameplay standpoint, if it's done already we won't see it again. DE are all about leeching life and raising/consuming the dead, so zombies would be the same thing with different animations and units, but the strategy would be too similar.
ah theres more then enough variation there, its actually better to implement something 'similar' while still bringing fresh new ideas as it takes less time to develop, balance etc... The only similarity is the unit conversion, and its done with entirely different mechanics (melee, any unit vs ranged, only 1 particular unit) with an entirely different type of unit spawned with entirely different mechanics of its own (low damage, but explodes vs fast scout with ok melee attack). Far from the same. Theres no 'leech life' at all, there is a stun, and a transfer life...both new mechanics as well?
Not only a life 'syphon' and stun but there is;
- Enhanced push back with DPS boost based on situational use.
- Suicidal explosion skill (as mentioned above)
- A mobile spawn point deployment.
- 2 square 100% damage skill
- Skill which causes damage to all cells around the unit
Thats like 2 partial and 5 brand new mechanics, not to mention an entirely different looking team...
Are you saying no team should have even one similarity to another team?
Not at all, I'm not saying it couldn't be done or that it won't, just that it's similar to DE. I think the whole point of the teams is to be completely unique, so I just don't see zombies coming into play when there is already a team that can create allies from dead enemies. However if done right, it could very well be implemented. I understand they would be quite different, however the main attraction to both teams is feeding off of the enemy team, so it just seems unlikely to me.
It is something I'd like to see, though it seems more likely to be during a holidar or something, maybe for a limited time run. I could see them adding it for Halloween or another time for free, then taking them off a week or two after Halloween. I just can't see zombies making it as a main team.
Guys, I've hacked into Robot Entertainment HQ and found files upon files about the upcoming armies. Here's what we'll see:
- Woodsy elves: the kind that use bows, arrows and are druid-like. One guy will use them exclusively and win unstoppably, causing people to get angry and rage quit... until the next army comes out.
- Orcs: Maybe joined by goblins or ogres as well. Played by neckbeards who spam the chat channel with WAAAUUUGH!! They're a terrible army in play.
- The Other Humans: Maybe they're a guild of assassins, maybe they're carnival tricksters. The point is there the weird alternative human army that's impossible to figure out how to play so when people win with them the forums are flooded with folks screaming that they should be nerfed.
- Kobolds: Or dragonkin, or lizardfolk, whatever. May ride dinosaurs. An army played by girls and one creepy furry guy.
- Gnomes: If they're not in with the dwarves then you'll probably see some small tiny tinkering with machinery race. Nobody plays them.
- Plants: If they're not with the woodsy-elves then they're here. They can summon trees and plants to block movement or harass units. No viable damage means that nobody plays them.
- The Weird Non-European Medieval Period Army: Complete with djinni, tengu or whatever. Played by the animu fans for the one samurai miko unit that makes no sense.
- Faeries: An oddly girlish army played by young females and trolls. They have great movement and numbers and have the special ability to die quickly.
- Shadow-folks: These guys are all dark and shadowy from the realm of Darkshadow at Darkshade keep... In darkness... Totally different from the DEs.
- Vampires: They drain health and summon phantoms and are dark. Robot Entertainment will realize they already have the DEs and will instead re-skin the DEs as Vampires and put this army out in October as a special "holiday army".
- Santa's Elves: The inevitable other holiday army... If they don't just re-skin the council to wear tinsel and holly.
- Beastmen: Wolfmen, ratmen, catwomen. Nobody will use them because they only have melee and kinda suck at it.
- Aliens: The point in which the game has officially jumped the shark. They will either look like Tyranids or Tau.
- Azeroth: The strange promotional army from a collaboration between some third-party developer and Robot Entertainment. They'll be broken, and flood the game with trolls.
- MissingNo: The "joke" glitchy-meme army. And by "joke" we mean "someone got drunk at the office party and uploaded a folder full of cat pictures to the Apple Store as an army. Sales went up so we just ran with it."
- Skaven: The absolute best, most perfect and balanced army in the game, released far too late as everyone left because they were pissed off at how Council Knights are still overpowered, one year later.
I really hope they don't have holiday themed armies. I would hate that. I mean, I wouldn't mind something like Undead coming out on Halloween. But what I don't want is Santa army.
i would love some different game types, maybe even do some 2v2 games or something.
Capture the flag is a really cool idea also.
A capture/control point style map might work too. Knights and impalers become really important, as is rushing the enemy. Also maybe a pure meat grinder style game where there are no crystals and you just try to curb-stomp the enemy forces.
I wonder what the Mods feel about these ideas. Let us know if they will actually be considered, or if we're just talking to ourselves here :)
Christmas, Easter, Valentines Day, all horrible ideas for holiday armies in my opinion. I might like a little undead for Halloween, but that's about it.
Serious ideas please Orphansmith, I don't want Robot to look over this and dismiss the serious ideas with the thought that this thread is a joke. Let's voice our opinions about what we really want to see come out soon, and maybe they just might listen and make it a reality.
I think an additional training mode against a computer would be nice, so you can practice your tactics without needing to wait several hours for another player to respond. Permanent (non seasonal/holiday themed teams) are a must, and quite a bit of them as noted above. Additional playing modes would be nice, here are my thoughts on how they could possible work.
- Protect the VIP/Leader. Start the match with a super unit placed on the field (instead of crystals). You can move him and use him as you like. Once this unit dies, you lose. The object is therefore to kill the enemy super unit. To prevent early suicides to kill your super unit, it is spawned on a defense tile. You then obtain other units/upgrades/spells as normal, although you have no chances of getting another super unit from reinforcments.
- Dodgeball (for lack of a better name). If you've ever played dodgeball, you know that you start with a team full of people, hit someone to get them out, and must hit an opponent to get an "out" teammate back in the game. This works similarly. You start with some number of units (perhaps one of each), and once you kill an enemy that unit is "out". If they kill one of your units, they can choose to return one of their "out" teammates to the playing field. This continues until one team is completely destroyed.
- Capture the flag. This could be done two ways. Each team has a flag, and you must capture the enemy flag and return it to yours to win (my choice). Alternatively, you can have a single flag in the middle of the map and return it to your side to win. You obtain units through reinforcements like normal.
- Team Deathmatch. Simple. The same game mode we have now, just without the crystals. When the enemy is out of units, you win.
I can think of others, but they'd be a bit too out the box. For an app, I doubt that TOO much will be added, however if these featyures were added I'd definitely love the game enough to keep playing it as long as there were still active members, no matter how long that will be.
Let me know what you think of these and above listed ideas, keep giving me more of your own, and try and get the Mods to check out this thread and get the developers thinking about these ideas.
Yes, something like a king of the hill type game, where you get points per turn controlling the hill, and once you reach a certain score you win.
Tons of great ideas in here. I'll make sure the dev team sees them. Worth noting, though, that some of the things in this thread may already be in progress ;)
New game types, new board configurations, new teams etc. are all brilliant ideas and no doubt coming soon I'm sure, but I'd also add that this game DESPERATELY needs to keep statistics and/or have a ranking system (ELO etc.) of some kind (Carcassonne does this pretty well). Integration with Game Center would be a plus too.
It also might be fun if there was some way to briefly shield or heal or move the crystals (maybe some kind of earthquake spell that shifts the all the tiles around? or a unit that takes the damage instead of the crystal etc.) ...too often I've gotten into battles where after a certain tipping point, the game was basically lost no matter what. There's not a lot of back and forth ebb and flow (partly because the games are focused and quick which is a good thing!) but it might be nice to have some mechanism to potentially save a hopeless looking situation.
(whoops. sorry...none of the above really falls into the "add-on" category)
Cool army ideas, tossing mine into the fray. The army's concept involves physically weak units using explosives to control space, with the option of going all out in a blaze of glory (cue Lady Gaga).
Goblins!
Wildly inventive, but also maniacal and without regard for their lives. They wield flashy weapons that make things go boom.
Violatile tech (Racial)
Goblin units explode when they are downed (not stomped), dealing damage to a 3x3 area around them.
Sapper (Melee)
Lightly armored and has complete disregard for the Geneva Convention. Lays a mine at his feet at the end of every turn.
Mortar (Range)
Long range AOE damage, but hurts himself with every attack.
Chemist (Support)
Heals and revives teammates. Attack debuffs enemies to receive increased damage from the next attack.
Pyro (Mage)
Short range, linear AOE damage that doesn't diminish with each target hit.
Robosuit (Super Unit)
Must be summoned onto an existing friendly goblin, removing it's abilities but granting it increased attack, armor and health. Ejects the pilot and explodes for additional damage when downed. May be revived by any friendly goblin walking onto it, donning it in the process.
Makeshift tunnel (Spell)
Creates a temporary (1 turn) deployment location on a non-premium tile. Provides some LOTR goblin swarm flavour.
Rocket boots (Shield-item)
Grants +1 movement range to a unit. Unit explodes for additional damage when downed.
Potion
One man's potion is another man's poison. The goblin potion can be used on enemy units to deal half the normal heal value as damage.
For posterity's sake, here is a list of prior suggestions that was being collected as well: http://www.robotentertainment.com/forum/topic/Suggestions

I got a kick out of this list. On a serious note, if the dev's took this list as what 'not' to do, we'd be golden.
I can't wait to see everything that's done with this game. It's my new favorite game, and I'd love to see more teams and other add ons in this thread. I'm sure that a few are already being developed that were listed here, now hopefully they'll see the team ideas/game modes and tweak them to their liking, but include them still :)
I like the idea of Orcs, Robots, Aliens
I actually like the idea of aliens, could be fun
I don't think aliens very well fit the fantasy setting. And every race looks like an alien anyway, so aliens would simply be a team that would be overpowered and doesn't fit the setting. Just my opinion...
Also seems a bit gimmicky. I'm all for a new race created by Robot Entertainment though. All ideas so far have been of previously invented races, a new addition can always be good.
To be honest I don't see how Werewolves fit the theme any more or are less gimmicky than aliens. Every game has thousands of fans clamoring list their favourite faction ideas. More realisticly, in keeping with what is out and coming out soon, we will see simple staples of fantasy groups. In other words, orcs, elves, etc.
Werewolves are very typical in fantasy settings. Aliens aren't. Long before Twilight and other vampire/werewolf movies, werewolves were introduced in myth, and have been standard in most fantasy games I've ever seen. Definitely a staple of the genre, perhaps not as much as elves, orcs, etc., but they still fit the setting.
You think aliens were not in myths prior to the age of movies? Aliens are easily as typical as werewolves, you look at D&D, one of the longest running fantasy games and there have been aliens in the monster manuals for ages, many fantasy rpgs also utalize alien beings, heck WoW even has aliens as a playable race. In fact in fantasy settings, aliens are more often put in as a group or faction, werewolves on the other hand are more commonly simple monsters.
Frankly, I wouldn't want to see aliens as a race in HA. But saying they are out of place in a fantasy world, especially compared to other faction ideas on this thread is ridiculous.
Not saying they aren't there, just not nearly as common. Fantasy is the world of mythical creatures, while aliens are science fiction. I don't think we should see robots, aliens, or things of that nature in the game. Just in my opinion (not saying I'm right, just my thoughts), fantasy and science fiction are seperate things, and I don't particularly like games that mix the genres. And I'm also not saying aliens completely don't fit fantasy worlds, I just don't see them coming to HA while other things mentioned here do seem plausible.
But by your own arguement, werewolves are more typicaly found in horror, so that too would be mixing genres. I understand it is your personal tastes, but if you start a thread asking for peoples opinions on what factions they want to see, you can't really shoot any down simply because they don't fit your preferences.
Not really what I meant about the genres. In particular, fantasy and science fiction are conflicting genres. Fantasy are things that are by nature made up, objects of our fantasies. Sci-fi is based on what one day may be a reality, which makes them fundamentally different from one another. Horror doesn't exclude something from being fantasy or sci-fi, while if something is scientifically capable of happening, it is not fantasy.
I understand your point though. I didn't mean to shoot down any ideas, and it's not my place to decide anyway, it's the devs, I was simply stating that I can't see aliens alongside elves and knights. Even the poster originally suggesting aliens meant it as a joke.
I wanna see Aliens in HA. Make it happen. (plays x-file theme music)

These are good ideas. I'd personally like to see some kind of Steampunk themed team with Engineers, Machinists, Robots, Golems, etc. Perhaps it can be a Gnome team, or that of some other diminuative but inventive race.
