Hero Academy's FPS?
I'm playing on an iPhone 4S and periodically the FPS of the game seems to be around 30. Although sometimes I get a clear and fluid 60 FPS. What bugs me is that there is no rhyme or reason to this. I can quit every application, relaunch HA, and not achieve the 60 FPS. My question is two fold. Should the game be running at a solid 60 FPS all the time and there might be something wrong with my phone? Or are othere people experiencing the FPS jump and unable to reproduce it?
I know this, but do you personally experience a smooth 60 FPS all the time?
The game often runs like *** on my iphone4 so glad I'm not the only one. Even on my ipad2 it sometimes is butter smooth and other times just ok but always better than on iphone. I think there's something else to it, don't think it's just a background or low mem thing.
I play on an old 3gs and I notice very considerable fluctuation in frame rate. Mostly I seem to get better framerates on certain maps and when there are fewer units deployed to the board. Other, more mysterious factors also seem to influence framerate, however.
I hope RE will comment on this because it's definitely an issue. After a fresh reboot of either my iPhone 4 or iPad 2 the game runs amazingly fluid, a real joy like a cartoon on TV. By the end of a game it's back to notably laggy on the iPhone and 'okay' on the pad but only since it's a much faster system overall. It seems like the game has a memory leak somewhere.
I've noticed a big fluctuation as well. Every once in a while I'll see a replay that is gorgeous enough that I shed a manly tear. It usually seems to be in the 40 fps range though, occasionally dipping well below that.

The new iPad with its quad core graphics processor plays HA at 60 FPS all the time. I didn't think this game was so demanding on the iPhone!
Yep so far on my 'new iPad' the game has been fluid 100% of the time AND looks incredible to boot. However when I go truly mobile and play on my iPhone 4 it's a far, far different experience with big dips in frame rate and generally laggy response time in the UI. Certainly the more stuff happening onscreen the worse it is but the fact that it starts out playing fluidly after a fresh boot of the device then degrades over time tells me there should be more to this, possibly something RE can address.
I notice exactly what the OP is talking about. I do not notice a pattern to it whatsoever. I was just making my moves in a few of my games and it was at 60 fps for the first few then on the last one it went back down to a "normal" 30ish. This was without closing the app down at all.
This is on a new third gen iPad, but I notice the same behavior on my iphone 4s as well. It definitely is not fixed on the new iPad.
True, it's not fixed on the new iPad, just masked since it's so much faster than an iPhone. I can still see times when it's ABSURDLY fluid on the new iPad and other times just 'ok', pretty much exactly the experience I had playing on the iPad 2. Maybe RE will address this with the HD version due out soon.
Really? I notice no difference at all in performance between my iPhone 4S and the third gen ipad.
Well I don't have a 4S only a 4 so yes in your case you won't see it as obvious with the notable hardware diff between the 2.
This is still an issue, wonder if RE has made any comments about it? Basically after a fresh boot the game runs at a fluid 60 fps but soon after drops to 30 or less for no apparent reason. This is regardless of platform, happens on every iOS device.
Further, HA runs VERY poorly now on the iPhone4, very laggy, lots of delay in the UI, really not even fun to play on that device anymore so it's a good thing I have a new iPad. I have to assume there are lots of players out there with iPhone4 class hardware that would be affected by this as well. I have a friend who won't even play anymore due to how painful it is to play on the iPhone4 hardware.
It takes about 30s from a fresh boot of my iPhone4 (or after killing it off the taskbar same diff) just to get past the title screen and another 15s before I can actually select a game, all told about a minute before I can actually be in a game. That may not seem like a lot but when I have just a short time and want to fire off a couple moves it's to the point where I'm not bothering. Coupled with the ingame lagginess I'm more and more just waiting until I'm home and can play on the iPad instead. By contrast, from a fresh boot to in game taking a turn on the new iPad is 30s or less.
So it's really 2 things, geneally poor performance on iPhone4 spec hardware (seeminly moreso after the Tribe update) and the mysterious drop in frame rate.

Well, I wouldn't say painful, but playing on the iPhone 4 certainly isn't as nice as playing on the new iPad.

That's kinda subjective, can you qualify that a little? Can you run the same test I did above, how long from a cold start until you are actually in a game making a move? Do you see lag navigating around the UI and ingame? I simply can't imagine your experience differs appreciably from anyone else with an iPhone4 since it's basically a closed platform.
The FPS thing however is different and unrelated to having slower hardware, it's just something within the game and it's a shame since for those brief few min when it's running at 60 fps it's such a joy to behold.







Frame rate will be affected by things like apps processing push data in the background or the quality of phone signal in the area.
