FPS Drops at gates! Turn off effects?

Orcs Must die 2 is an amazing game without a doubt. It runs flawlessly at almost any resolution on myradeon hd 4550. However, here is my issue, near the gates, my FPS goes from say 40-60 to less than 10. I'm 99% sure the strange gate effects are causing this. Can I manually turn it off?
This has also happened to me on all of my computers. It's really problematic if I'm cornered up against the gate - hinder the ability to shoot.
I also have the same problem when I place too many traps in an area - the effect of the aoe display stacks and causes massive lag, which can stall the placement of more traps.
