Dark Elves vs Shaolin strategy?
For the most part, I find the Shaolin a relatively easy opponent, however I have my biggest difficulty playing against them with Dark Elves.
I think it's because:
1. Void Monks are much less effective. The 'behind enemy lines' tactic just doesn't work, because combo attacks wipe then out in 1 turn, and they end up on the other team.
2. It seems Elves are particularly vulnerable to combo attacks
3. When they go defensive, I can't do enough damage to pick off units. Whereas the Council have Archers, the Tribe have waves, TF2 have snipers... Necromancers can't deal enough damage from a safe distance.
4. The Wraith is useless due to all of the above.
Now, I've had some success on the boost tile map, because I can go aggressive early on, but if a good Shaolin player goes first and plays defensively I end up losing.
What do other DE players find effective and where do you use your upgrades?
I think Impalers are the key. Dragged knockouts are very hard for SL to handle. Void Monks are also still awesome for hit and run harassment. Think guerrilla warfare.
Kill poisoners often and frequently. They only have 3, and if you can make that 0, you should win most times. Basically, Dark Elves have 9 quality offensive units, plus the Wraith, Shaolin have 3 poisoners, plus the Shadow, plus scrubs.
A geared windblade can be annoying, sure. But if there is no poisoner around, most times you are going to be able to deal with her without risking unit conversions.
wraith can be a huge tool for dark elves against shaolin...any smart dark elves player will learn how to use wraith againt shaolin
Please expand, being the smart dark elf player you are.
I'm guessing TheHero is talking about capitalizing on the low health of recent Shadow converts to feed a young Wraith easily. Unfortunately, any smart Shaolin player will recognize this danger and avoid putting easy meals in front of the smart Dark Elf player's Wraith. Relying on a leveled-up Wraith is still as inconsistent as ever, though it can always make a nice deterrent or distraction.
I'm finding it hard to crack a SL turtle. With a dragon in reserve, you can't afford to leave any unit within range of a posioner, and with combos and a shadow, you can't afford to leave units in range (i.e. forcing trades, or forcing "leftover" damage, is no go).
That said, best defence is no be there, so I've been hitting SL hard in the early game and treating them like DW - lite, basically. No aura means that they're about as squishy as CL is early game, so take the opportunity and hit hard, make them spend the dragons and bamboos. If you can off the shadow, I think it's worth spending an imp sword and scroll, just to prevent the late game turtle.

Indeed.... A late-game Shaolin without their Shadow is a Snapping Turtle without his Snap.
exactly my point trip ... i said its a huge tool ... not to be relied on...because a smart shaolin player will work hard to avoid or take out that wraith..but having a wraith basically deters shaolin's greatest stregnth besides combos ... since the wraith is arguably the worst super unit in the game, i would venture to say that the wraith's BEST chance at being a true super unit is against shaolin
"cuban" never said i was a smart dark elves player but thanks for the compliment nonetheless ;)
