Choosing your map
I don't know if this has been suggested yet, but with the number of upcoming tournaments and increasing number of maps, I think it would really be nice if for private games the map could be chosen by the players rather than being completely random (of course random could still be an option too).
This could make for more fun finals matches in these tournaments too, where each player chooses a map, and if its a tie the last map could be decided by the community, etc etc.

great idea, i don't really like the tribe map so if i had the option to choose the map that would be sweet
It's a nice suggestion, there would have to be some system that showed the opposing player if they had chosen random or a specific map, otherwise things like the league would be undermined (I.e council players would choose Barbed Crystal most of the time.)
Good point P_T, the "you've been invited to a game" screen should contain the map selection were this to be implemented.

Yet another feature that is already in Outwitters, releasing on the App store this Thursday. I like HA better, but Outwitters kicks its butt in the feature department.
The biggest knock on outwitters is that the teams are close to reskins of each other. But man, they got the little stuff very very right.
It might also be good to have a random that allows each player to ban 1 or 2 maps.
And this should be implemented!
It'd be good if it showed first turn AP as well.

I'd like to see a "vote for map" option when you start a new game. After you select your team, you then select a map or random. Or perhaps the game chooses 3 maps and you get to vote for one.
I have to admit, at first blush I don't like this idea - people will choose maps that appear to favor their race, or we end up with all dust all the time servers. I'd rather have rotated maps begin the default, and maaaaaybe if it's a targeted challenge, then you get to choose or agree on a map. Still, I think it's a lot of work for not much benefit.
well that is actually nice idea and addition, specially because the maps get more and more. I am sure Robot will do something about that, shouldnt be SO big change for them in the code.
Interestingly, in the game description it lists "Random playfields keeps battles fresh!" as a feature. Sounds like the current system is by design.
i just remember when the tribe map first came out, my roommate and i were trying to play on it, had to start and forfeit like 7 games with each before we finally drew it it which was just absurd. lol
also commenting about the league and how (of course) certain maps can favor certain matchups: I don't know if there is enough data for this in the league (I would think there is), but the virtual player ELO system could be implemented for each matchup and map as opposed to just the FTA. because otherwise I agree I'd never want to play against a council on the tribe map going second for example
I don't see anything wrong with the suggestion for private games. If a player doesn't like the map the host player has selected they either decline the challenge or pick a team that they feel will be suited to that map. That's pretty simple.
Random for rated games, selection for practice games. Everybody wins!
If i could choose to play on which map i'd go 100% wins on the teleport map with dwarves so i think the random element is good to have. So what aaron is saying is probably the best choice.
To be honest that's all the OP was suggesting in the original post.
