Blue Screens of Death and Random Crashes
Hi All.
I recently had a break from OMD2, but i bought the addons during the steam sale, and having alot of fun with the game again. However ever since i have started playing again i have had multiple crashes (complete system hangups) during endless modes on multiplayer and single player. No matter what map.
I have also had 3 Blue Screens Of Death, this HAS only happened while playing OMD2. I play FIfa 13, Batman arkham City, torchlight, wow all on high settings with no errors, no crashes at all.
After the first two crashes, i set my settings down to medium, everything off (FFSA etc) and a res of 1280 x 720 (looks awful on my 22inch HD screen) - and for a few levels it ran fine. But the last 4 games ive played, crash after crash after crash.
Ive never experienced one game destroying my computer. Everyone who owns a computer will know that shutting down properly, is damaging to your computer. But when its frozen with blue screen or just frozen in general you have no choice.
Before you start saying, verify your files, check your drivers, ive done all that, - clean install of all my drivers, uninstalled everything and re-installed all my graphics and cpu drivers. Defragged my harddrive, cleaned it of clutter, and i still get BSOD ONLY on this game.
These are my specs:
Mainboard : MEDIONPC MS-7646
Chipset : AMD RD770
Processor : AMD Phenom II X4 820 @ 2800MHz
Physical Memory :8192MB (2 x 4096 DDR3-SDRAM )
Video Card : ATI Radeon HD 5670
Operating System : Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit)
DirectX : Version 11.00
I wont play this game until there is a fix that stops the hanging and the BSOD, as i am not risking my pc for the sake of OMD2. So I hope you can get a fix sorted asap.
Cheers
What driver version are you using for your card? ATIs drivers have been pretty crap lately. I went through about 4 versions until I found one that doesn't BSOD my computer when I play games. If you updated your drivers recently, roll back to the previous version you had and see if the problem still persists. I have a 5770 and the 12.8 drivers work fine for me. I think they are up to 12.10 now...but I've heard they are pretty touchy.
Also, did you see what the BSOD was? IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, stuff like that. Sometimes those can narrow down where the problem is. But, if you did checks on your hardware and they came out fine, that probably wont be much of a help.
Ah okay thanks, since its the only game that crashes, it might be the drivers with that game, ill roll back the drivers caus thats something i havent tried, and see if they work. I have had trouble with ATI drivers for a while, there was a time when i used 12.6 i got constant blue screens, i updated to 12.8 they were stable, Ill roll back to that and let you know if it helped. Thanks for the advise!. Really want to blow some orcs up! haha.
12.6 was pretty bad for me as well. 12.8 works well for me, haven't had a BSOD in any of the games I play (Skyrim, OMD2, CoH, Overlord II)
No problem, always out to help. Just wish ATI would get off their lazy bums and make a decent driver release for once :P
*UPDATE*
Okay after many trial and error. I have installed every variation of drivers from 12.4 - 12.11 (beta)
All of which crash my computer when trying to run OMD2.
Any Endless map i play on my computer dont even crash, it just turns its self off, this is s safety feature to stop my comp blowing out. This HAS only happened on OMD2.
I dont think my computer will handle anymore crashes like total cpu failure theres nothing in event viewer and it passes the dx diagnostic tests. I am concenred now that all these crashes due to OMD2 HAS damaged my graphics card, now im experiencing random crashes with games that NEVER crashed (mass effect 3, fifa 13, Plants vs zombies etc).
As stated in my previous post, my comp specs are more than enough to run this game on a reasonable detail level. I have no doubt in my mind that OMD2 is responsible for my now current computer problems with my graphics card. I wont be able to replace it until well into the new year, which leaves everything else i bought in the steam sale completely useless.
I have never had so many BSOD or random computer switch offs in any other game that i own.
Can anyone direct me to their customer services?
One VERY ANGRY and unhappy OMD gamer =(
Normally, when you have random shut downs (total power down of the computer), there is a hardware issue. It sounds like your graphics card and/or PSU was on it's last limbs, and OMD2 just happened to be the game you were playing when the issues started.
If you have a spare PSU, I would test that first and see how everything runs. If the issue still persists, do a memtest on your RAM. If it's not that, it could be the graphics card. But, usually when a graphics card is dying you will see screen tears, red artifacts, funky graphics, etc. Rule out your PSU before anything.
You're not alone here, brother(sister?). This has been happening to me as well. Minus the crashing on the other games. The only game causing my blue screen is OMD2 as well. From what I can tell from browsing the forums here, it appears the DLC is the common denominator. Although, i'm not doubting VaFail's advice here, it seems rather unlikely that your problem has to do with anything mentioned in the previous post. It's possible but it seems rather unlikely.
Check this program out guys:

You have to scroll down a bit to find the download link. If you couldn't catch your BSOD error, this keeps logs of it shows what .dll or .sys file is causing it. Helped me many a few times narrowing down what the actual problem was.
But OP, since you rolled back drivers, tried new ones....I don't think that's going to help much now. But you might have a hardware issue...especially when I hear total shutdowns. How are your temperatures as well? Shutdowns can also be caused by overheating.
I have all the DLCs and I have never gotten a BSOD while playing OMD2. It's different for everyone though...so I wonder if there's a memory leak or bug within the game causing it. I guess you can e-mail them directly, but the Robot guys are on here, I'm sure they've seen this post.
Thanks for your replys Guys much apprecaited :)
VaFail i have considered that my graphics card is in need of a replacement, and my PSU as well. My Core temp of my card sits around 60 - 75 degrees when running games, out side of games it sits at 45 - 60. I dont have a decent cooling case nor do i have suffcent fans in the case ( i have 2), but i have never had problems with anything ive done before. I do regularly clean out the computer and de-dust it. its my main source of entertainment so i look after it! :).
Ive since installed drivers 12.10, and the crashes i mentioned before have now stopped. The only game i cant run is OMD2. Since the DLC i downloaded it has crashed all the time at various parts of the game, endless all the time thou, after wave 12 the comp either switches off or bluescreen of death.
But yeah as you say its different for everyone, my mate has OMD2 he has had no problems.
Ive now uninstalled the game, and reinstalling. But im waiting to hear from someone from robot to help me out here, it could very well be a memory leak with the games code. They did have this problem before if i recall.
I ran Memtest passed all okay.
I do have bluescreen viewer but i have been unable to locate the dump files on my hard-drive, ive looked in the windows minidump folder and the c drive, and ive been able to find that, and the cause of the problem, which is very strange since ive always been able to find the cause before.
Im not a computer engineer i just know enough to keep my comp running smooth :)
Its strange how one game could cause this much trouble. Its one of my favourtes too, over 140 hours already haha. Shame i cant play it at the moment.
I will have to e-mail robot directly if i dont hear anything. Im out of ideas on how to get it to work now.
Hmm yeah, that's a little warm for idle and max. I sit around 38C on idle, 65ish max. Get any extra fan if your case can fit another, it will help.
Yeah, seems like an issue with the game if you aren't getting BSODs other than in OMD2. Lame :(
I'm sorry to jump in suddenly like this, but I just wanted to say that the exact same thing has been happening to me as well. First time, it just shut down the game and sent me to the desk top. The last two times it completely shutdown my computer. I'll be right in the middle of the game and without warning it shuts down.
This is the only game it does this with... Never had this problem before with any of my other games (I play L4D, L4D2, Borderlands 1 &2, Portal 2, Sims 3, even Plants vs Zombies and other little indie games).
The only reason I feel I need to say something about this is because this second time it shut down my computer I had to struggle to get it to come back. It nearly killed it completely. I don't believe it has anything to do with my graphics card... but I'm not risking my computer further to find out. It's a good game, honestly, I know I would have had fun with it. But I'm deleting this game off my computer and hoping it hasn't done permanent damage.
I just wanted to say how much I appreciate this post because it did shed some light on the issue and let me know I wasn't alone. I do hope others having the problem can get it fixed.
*UPDATE*
After cleaning my computer and de-dusting it, my core temp now sits at 40 - 45 degrees while not running anything and while running games its between 50 - 60 degrees. (to be fair it was quite dusty)
Ive not had any crashes with anything else that i play, so its deffenatley OMD2. I re-installed it and same thing happened, didnt get a BSOD thou just powered off my computer again without shutdown. lame :(
@ DNova : Yeah i hear were your coming from buddy. Its not worth the risk playing this game its not effecting everyone which i doubt Robot will do anything about it. Would like to hear from someone from robot to this post to see if they are working on a fix for this issue. Theres alot of crashes happening not just BSOD i have seen on the steam forums too unhappy gamers because of this.
But i play borderlands and LFD2 as well ^^
I dont have borderlands 2 thou, getting that in the new year.
Thanks for the help guys, ill be shelving OMD2 until they sort the problem out. :)

Bump, anyone available to comment on this issue? - ive ran some tests on my graphics card and all passed okay. I know my hardwares not the issue here.
Also i miss blowing up orcs :(
Every orc will die, it is only a matter of time before i kill them all!
