Are randoms getting better?
Is it just me or are randoms getting better? I tried the league but didn't stick with it due to all the score keeping. So recently I went back to randoms and, post-patch, I'm finding them better than I am used to. There's still the odd Blue Council who either gets trashed or quits after two turns, but I'm getting a lot more decent matchups. I suppose it's due to fewer new players, but I'm hoping it's due to some new matchmaking algorithms on RE's end...
Anyone else noticed improved randoms?
I recently started playing about a week ago, and I'll tell you one thing...I would have been MUCH worse if it wasn't for the Beginner's Guides on this forum. After starting one game, I instantly googled strategies, and the amount of information I found I'm sure saved me a ton of frustration! Whether or not it actually makes any difference, I'm going to go ahead and say that the Beginner's Guide and dialogue on the forum is helping randoms to steadily improve! :)
Randoms are a huge mixed bag. I have a few ongoing opponents who are decent that I've found through randoms, but more often than not the random opponents are very new, if not completely inexperienced.
WTB built-in optional ELO. Messing around with uploading screenshots and junk to be part of the league is just a lot more work than I want to put into actually playing the game decenly.

I know that Jwallyr is adamantly opposed to League membership, but for all other prospective members: we don't upload screenshots.

I'm not adamantly opposed to an awful lot in this world, I just assumed that the League would need some kind of proof of a win/loss. I suppose that unless it's contested that wouldn't be necessary. It's just sad that the League has to exist at all, because the in-game matchmaking system is so inadequate.
Agreed. I really wish RE would rethink their stance on an internal implementation... :(
But no, we don't require evidence of wins except in the very rare case of disputed results. The winner posts the result through a simple form (mostly drop boxes and check marks) and everything is tabulated automatically from there.

Good to know. Maybe when I'm not either 1) Frantically working on my backlog of schoolwork or 2) Frantically working on my backlog of WoW dailies I'll register. Would still prefer to have it be seamless in the app, of course.

Cheers -- we'd love to have you join up! I think you are still overestimating the amount of time overhead involved, but I know how school stuff goes (though I frown on the WoW prioritization...) ;)

Just wanted to +1 the League here. The more the merrier!
It is not so difficult to join as Trip has stated, but once your foot is in the door the experience is totally up to you. I've been a member since last June and have enjoyed my time there. I personally have slowed down a lot in playtime on this game, but every person I've encountered in the League has been cool about the game. We're all looking for interesting and challenging matches instead of the random luck of the draw of who we get in the current random matchmaking built into the game.
Additionally don't feel the need to be pressured to maintain an active profile in the league either. You can just use the matchmaking page to find interesting opponents and make requests for practice matches. Most people when not busy are open to such things and you may find and curate a good "friendlist" of HA foes that can test your mettle.
Lastly even if you run into situations the admins are very helpful and courteous in assisting. (That's a +1 for ARTNJ and rest of the admins)
To the original poster. I'm not sure we've enough information to glean anything useful. That said all the random matches I've started since the most recent patch have resulted in non trivial* games including some very crafty Shaolin players! I also got stomped hard a few times which resulted in requests for more games :-)
Maybe the time of day I'm initiating challenges is resulting in a specific population of more skilled players?
I don't know if it is luck, sneaky RE algorithms, or other BUT I'm happy for the fun games.
Also maybe the remaining pool of active players have finally learned the basics of the game!?
* it is possible that my skill is degrading as well which makes everyone else tougher to beat- but I don't care as long the game stays funzors.

Yep. Either I'm getting dumber or randoms are getting a lot better.
Before the new year, I religiously rematched every random who beat me. No way I can do that now.
Newbies are still newbies, but a horde of well-experienced randoms is growing more quickly than I am getting better.
I can definitely agree that randoms are getting better. I just joined the league recently, thinking I was pretty good, and I'm getting my *** handed to me. I decided to start up a couple random games so I could feel better about myself, and the same thing is happening over there as well! D:
you can tell if its a "true random" if their icon is still the basic knight one lol

There are still plenty of true casuals, more than real aces, so its a lot of luck. But there are a ton of decent but not great players that can beat one in a particular game if you are playing random to not think to hard. It doesnt take too much error to lose on the teleport map or the speed boost map, for example.
