This Are Serious Tournament =(ಠ_ಠ)= ...
Hi guys! Judgement is in 2 days! How are your games progressing?
RE: Writch [TR] v okyn91 [SL]
Still plugging along and while I feel I have a slight advantage, it's not enough that he can't change the tide. It'll be hard to judge by 3rd parties, I feel. It might be easier to give this one an extension (which might, indeed, be your judgement).
I have a bad feeling that Flameshock is going to take this one. His council...well, let's just say they zap, flame, shock and awe. Fortunately my little TF2 squishies have already exacted their revenge against him in a bloodbath rematch on the speed boost map.
Excellent tourny overall, Tabby. Thanks for organizing and looking forward to the next one!
We're just one day away from judgment! Writch, how's it going?
We've got 4 matches left! Can Flameshock end the game on a tie with Gribbs?
Flameshock [CL] v n888 [TR]
Flameshock [CL] v okyn91 [SL]
n888 [TR] v luigiman [DW]
Writch [TR] v okyn91 [SL]

Not much diff than posted yesteday above - we maybe got only 3 more rounds in. And so according to your Tourney stement as listed in OP:
Judgment: Each participant of such unfinished match can enter judgment, by sending screenshots of (i) the game board at the deadline, (ii) the participant's reinforcements list, and (iii) the opponent's reinforcement list, through email, to be judged by the serious cat (me) before 2359GMT 2 Feb 2013, if a win should be awarded. If one participant from the match does not submit the screenshots before the deadline, that participant will be deemed to have lost the match. If neither participants submit screenshots for judging, the match will be recorded as a loss for both participants.
The serious cat's judgment, is, of course, serious. And final.
So I'll send/post-in-imgur in the screen shots as requested byt the time indicated.
But its not like either of us are taking only 1 move a day so judgement seems a bit draconian - especially since its basically a battle for last place and the tourney winners can be declared w/o the results of our game in, right? The only thing at stake at this point is whether I get a goose egg for the entire tourney; - its down to my last chance for my only win. And I'd hate that be based on a TO decision rather than a decisive TKO or CK.
Whaddya say, Nat.... Let the losers lash it out?
My match with n888 is still going, but my offense has decayed to a single annihilator, which im not planning on surviving too long against Tribe. I will try to finish it for now, because im shooting for winning half my games. So dont clock it in quite yet, but theres a good chance n888's got this one.
Yeah, I'm more worried about Flameshock's games, to be honest. I have to be fair, but still..Writch, luigiman, you guys get a 1 week extension for now - try to finish those games up! :)
Flameshock, can you check in? How are your games going? Do you need to take a judgment win?
Awww, thanks, Tabby!! Im gonna need it too - I last played against n888 when i made that last post, and he just now responded.
Game L:
Flameshock (Council) wins against okyn91 (Shaolin) by Resignation on the Train map on Round 37.
My game against n888 is almost over, he's down to his last witch and I still have 2 archers and 3 clerics :)
Woo! Remember, if Gribbs and Flameshock are tied on number of wins, Flameshock wins because he was the winner of the match between them!
... and by "last witch", I hope you mean "last witch and indeterminate number of other units", not just "last witch and nothing else"! >.>

Nope, just last witch :D
Game: AS
Flameshock (Council) wins against n888 (Tribe) on the Grass map by TKO on Round 59
Well, that wraps up all my games! This has been a really fun tournament, I learned a lot and really liked the round robin format. Really hope to see you host another tornament, Tabby :)
I am the only who beat the grand champ? Yay me
Yay you indeed! :)
And with that, I proclaim Flameshock the serious winner of this serious tournament! You sir, win one Internet for your outstanding performance, with CL no less! I honestly was expecting a DW to take it, but this just goes to show the oldies are still goodies. :)
Alright, now for the debrief and comments. :) I'd like some feedback, guys!
Did you think the tournament lasted for too long? I was worried that by the end of it, enthusiasm would have died down quite a bit. It seemed like the majority of the games ended within 2 weeks, but then our winner was turning in games until the very end, so I don't know if the tournament could be made any shorter..
Was playing 9 tournament games at the same time too taxing? It's a problem with round robin, but I absolutely did not want to have rounds, as each roubd basically adds 3 weeks to the length of the tournament.
Was seeding a problem? I know the tournament let down some players in terms of the experience due to the skill level disparity, but unless I limit contestants to members of the league, there's just no good way to seed players..
Any other comments or improvements you think I could have made? Let me know! I'm intending to run another beginners/first timers tournament once the patch drops. :)

Even the League is imperfect, there's about 40 elo difference between myself and gribbs/flameshock (gribbs/flameshock is a difference of 1) Then the third place was 50 elo ahead of everybody else.
I personally had a good time. 9 games weren't too taxing for me personally but I know other people spend more time working than I do
I've actually not yet completed any league games (I am in the middle of my first one now), so I should still be at 1,200, and therefore it would probably make sense to exclude me from any analysis.
I personally really enjoyed the Round Robin format quite a lot. The ability to complete an entire tournament in a matter of weeks should be a real draw to many folks. I also really enjoying seeing how my opponents stacked up against each other while my games against each of them were still fresh in my head.
I think the skill level for most of the people who finished on the upper end were pretty close, there were only 1-2 games where the skill level or unlucky draws caused lopsided games.
The duration was nice, and having people finish up their games in a quick fashion helped make this a smooth tourney. THere were no additional rounds, so no one was waiting and the tourney did not drag out like other tournies I have been in.
I think the 9 round robin games at the same time was not too bad because we were given ample time, assuiming everyone made atleast 1-3 turns a day.
Great job organizing and keeping everything on time.
Did you think the tournament lasted for too long?
Are you serious? We still have ongoing tournaments that started months ago! I think your time limit + adjudication plan was a stroke of genius, and that all future forum tourneys should follow your lead there.

Seconded.
The length was superb. By far the shortest tourney Ive seen. It had more matches per player than my tourney, but was done in less than half the time.
IMO, 9 matches was a tad much at times, but I would prefer that over rounds without a doubt.
With seeding, I thought it was fine. If someone has an issue with skill difference, they shouldnt sign up.
i wish i wasn't busy when this tournament started, this is an amazingly set up and well thought out ordeal. I would love to play in another one not being as busy now and i really hope you make another one tabby!

Man, did you not read the thread title? I are serious cat!
Ok but seriously, I thought enthusiasm died down a bit about 2 weeks in, when the majority of the games had already been submitted. Was that not the case, or were people just not posting as much?
Another issue with the round robin format is that in order to limit the number of games to something sensible, the number of participants in the tournament needs to be capped, and this resulted in a few people not being able to participate. I've been thinking of ways to solve this, but all the solutions involve some kind of trade off... Oh well. We'll see, I'm just glad that people had fun. :)

Make multiple really small round robin divisions, that way you only have to play like 3 round robin games, and then maybe some of those people in the divisions move on. That, way it probably limits games to 9-10. This only works if people are still sorta active. I guess this can get more participants into the tourney :P
I think a two-phase round-robin tourament could strike a great balance if there were enough people interested.
For approx 16-22 total players you could start with two random pools of 8-11 players each and have each pool conduct a simultaneous round robin with the top 4 or 5 players from each advancing on to a second phase (you could also do a second phase for the losers bracket if there was interest). It would be doubling the length of the tournament but with the benefit of accomodating more players and also providing some level of skill segregation that should make the second phase very competitive.
For even more people, you could start with 3 round robin pools that each send the top 3 or 4 players to a winners pool.
So when is the next tournament coming up i want to participate in it.

+1
Haha, after the patch drops! Probably about week after the next patch drops, just to let people get used to the new Shaolin map and the team changes.
Last and the very least.....
Writch [TR] v okyn91 [SL] Tribe Map, 106 rounds.
Writch resigns to okyn91 on this marathon game. Okyn91's three Taoist and full metal Monk eventually got the leg up on my three Shaman and naked witch. His armor kept me from ever stomping the monk, because I KO'd him quite a bit. Eventually I got tired of skulking in the corner guarding my remaining 2 crystals (which he snuck up on for a while with screening bamboo) and having me on the ropes for a dozen rounds. So I made a mad mass dash (in both senses of the word mad) for his unguarded crystals. At 5AP per, it didn't get very far before the witch bit it with only a pair of Shaman making it to spiking territory - and it wasn't them spiking like after a touchdown, ifyouknowwhatImean.
So there, you inglorious batards, gloat on Writch's total humiliation in another tourney where he finishes in dead last.
This one with a goose egg.

:O
well done handing Flameshock his first loss! This means that Gribbs is still in the running for top spot!
Mew? =^^=
