Age of Empires Online Discussions
Maybe on this forum it's an even split, but on Agecommunity (you know, the Age of Empires forums) almost everybody hates the game.
Either way, this new game is supposed to unite the community and attract new players. So far it's done nothing but divide the loyal community, and I don't think it would attract many new players.
This.
RE gave a new reason for AoE players to switch to SC2. AoEO will not unite the community, it is splitting it even more. AoEO will attract new players, BUT CASUAL PLAYERS, not hardcore, as SC2.
Im trying to imagine how the folks at robot feel, launching the announcement of "their" new game and then seeing that their fan base hates it. change the graphics style, at least. if robot wont change anything else, please the graphics, i cant spend hours playing Age of Empires looking at graphics designed for 10 year olds.

They are just telling their oppinion on how to improve the game ffs..
No, he said doesn't intend to buy the game "what so ever" and he says this new game is a disgrace.
I do not intend on buying this game what-so-ever and i think that this brings complete disgrace to Age.
I can't recall I actually signed up on a compainies forum with no intention on buying their game yet still pound on it...
Its really childish, as is most of this negativity recently.

What really worries me is the fact that it's free... Nothing worth having is ever free. Put a price tag on it. Please.
I agree with you DarkStar... atleast put it as 600 MS points or 1200... Anyways we know that Age of Empires DLC will be paid :)... i would just love if any lil robot could confirm Clan Support :)
What i don't get is, why are they doing this.
And why are they proud of it?
Why do they make this as their first game?? they will loose thousands of age fans and won't get many more. and above that. They get a bad reputations. They have to do really good with the "Game 2.0" to get it right again.
If this game is free because its a promotion for the studio than thats their bad.
if they want this game to be played much, than they missed their goal. because otherwise this game should have been better or more fun than the older Age games. and since the game play is slightly the same, they should have hugely increased the graphics. But they didn't. they just made it more worse.
I don't know what others gonna do, but the fact is that I will stick to AoM and AoE 2 and move to Starcraft 2, and i guess a lot of people will do.
btw why don't you people take a look at 0 A D its an rts game in development by me and others, and its a free game. (open source). and it has much similarities with the Age Games
IMO RE is doing a gret job... I hope the beta testers dont forget to give their feedback and suggestions... and they arent missing anything the KEY features of AoE series are there the only thing that has changed Its that... is 100% Multiplayer... tbh thats what AoE needed atm
Uhm, EmjeR, jumping to conclusions much? I mean it is great that you already know that this game won't be played by anybody and won't attract new players, and also that it is not fun to play (I assume you are in the beta? What's your Gamertag?).
Also, going to a forum for another game to promote your own is a rather bad style; and with all due respect to the community's work, complaining about graphics in the same post where you try to promote 0 AD is...facepalm.
And Darkstar, the biz is changing; there are many great free games. I play far too much League of Legends these days, and that game is absolutely free (unless you buy custom skins like I do^^).
Dear Robot Entertainment,
The first thing I done when I got home from university today, was logon to RTSsanctuary, (formerly Agesanctuary.com) which is something I do everynight. Infact, i've helped run the network for the past six years and have been a follower of the Age series for approximately 10 years. I literally worshipped the game to the point of hagiography and checked this website everyday in anticipation of a new RTS 'Age of' franchise that the whole world has been waiting for. What I did not expect, was Robot Entertainment, the successors of Ensemble Studios, one of the greatest game producing studioof all time, to veer away from a genre that is trademark and has provided you with so much success over the years. As I began reading the news about it, I had to check my calender to make sure that April had passed. I was sure that this was an April fool's joke. To my disbelief, we were in August. I still hold on to the hope that this is a very belated joke.
Economically, this makes sense. The gaming world is changing. As the music world moved from classical to teachno/trance, the gaming world must adapt to the market also. This is done by maintaining RTS as the 'core' genre, but adopting MMO aspects to attract a growing demand. Problem is, the entire 'Age of' series has been built upon the very foundations of a loyal fan-base. I would have been under the impression that retention of such loyal fanbase would be paramount to any company and that a game can be built around such a community. However, this proposed game, I can predict, will alienate majority of that fanbase. The last game you guys brought out was Age of Empires III: The Asian Dynasty in 2007. That's 3 years that fans have waited patiently for a game that was to never be. You open forums on the Robot Entertainment website for "wild speculation". May I ask, how many people were wildly speculating and drooling at the prospect of an RTS/MMO? One glimpse in those forums and all I can read are 'Age of Mythology 2!", "Age of Empires 4!" and "Age of Conquerors remake!". My question to you is why try to fix something that was never broken?
I'm sorry for ranting. I'm a huge fan of everything Ensemble Studios have done. But it's for that very reason - because I am proud of what the company has achieved over the years and am delighted to play any title they release, that I am disappointed. Please don't take this the wrong way, but as someone who has watched the company very closely over the years, I feel like Robot Entertainment have resigned themselves to Blizzard. What do I mean by this? I feel that Robot realise that Blizzard have the competitive gaming market. SC2 is one of the most hardcore strategy games on the market at the moment. World of Warcraft is also very big on esports. I feel as if you guys have just accepted that no amount of tweeking to one of your existing hardcore RTS games will match what Blizzard have competitively. As a result, you are just trying to differentiate your product to attract a less competitive market. In the process, however, you are threatening the loss of thousands and thousands of loyal fans.
I'm sorry to say, but my heart literally sank when reading this news. I am extremely disappointed. Especially knowing that this was the microsoft endorsed game. Meaning that 'Game 2.0' will unfortunately not be an 'Age of' game as Microsoft hold exclusive rights over the franchise. This game is only just starting to accept invites for it's beta. It's like waiting for the World Cup to come to Australia. Maybe...one day we might get it. It's something that millions of people would love to see, but it's chances just keep fading away further into the distance.
They knew this was going to be our reaction (FAQ anyone?)
Just read the FAQ.... it says everythign you gotta need to know about the game..if you play the game and dont like it.. Ok say it i dont like it then dont come back on forums keep whinning. they arent gonna waste 2 years of working and delete bcuz of some guys...
This edition of Age of Empires is obviously targeting the younguns to teen audience. At least we have Starcraft II to hold us by (their in game menu is AMAZING-facebook integration and everything. Simply rad.) until AoM2 and AoEIV
I do hope game 2.0 is what we're looking for.

1st- MGS said they wanted to refresh the looking of the game there is no "Childish" things in Age of Empires Online just because the Art is Cartoon.. example... TF2 is Cartoon is it for kids? WoW when it released i didnt saw many kids playing you know why? "IT WAS HARD"
This has nothing to do with Facebook... just because they meant social it isnt about Twitter and Facebook... its about diplomacy in game... like Clans,Friends etc...
And the 2nd Game is RE own IP they cant do AoM2 and AoEIV because they dont own the rights. this is the only game being publish my MS

I doubt that this game will appeal to kids anymore than previous age games gameplay-wise; with the capital and persistent items, the initial learning curve might be slightly higher than before (that of course also depends on the tutorials etc).
Raven, Theres no way that "we", the old RTS gamers are going to have a high learning curve in this game, you saw in one of the vids the simple tech tree that the civ has?, I just think this game is only making for "fun" purposes but nothing near to the competitive scene ( for that we got to stick with a 10 years old game like AoC). However waiting for the beta but ...
This game will be harder then old Ages... it will have more stuff and loads of Ways to play
I don't know which video you refer to Judas. However, depending on what was shown, there is a strong likelyhood that it was only one third of the tech tree, as I haven't seen it in a single window yet. Also, persistent elements (the new thing) do not figure into the classic tech tree. This game has depth, believe me. Whether it is aimed at competitive gamers or not depends on the MP setup and options, which is something that only MGS and RE know so far; sorry, no idea either way.
Have any of you heard how the day night cycle affects gameplay and whether quest missions have the day night cycle as well?
I don't think that anyting has been said about that; little has been officially announced beyond what is on the official site. I hope that the game will score a few title stories (especially in Europe), so we get more hard info soon.
Hmm i think the beta is on for europeans? dammit i Live in Portugal I hope i dont get selected by that

At least you get the "Organ Gun" :P
Damm sorry my english misspelled some stuff back in there :P i mean i would get mad if i werent selected to BETA testing bcuz i live in Port :P
This s*** is bananas... b-a-n-a-n-a-s. Why force a macroevovlution of age of empires. All it required was a slight micro evoloution based on its own forward momentum. The mutation was bad... I still can't believe when i go to the AoEO webpage that those images are supposed to make me want to play.. it looks so laame.. uhhg.. everthing is made of clouds, so poofy and dreamy, battle is ugly and bloody. we dont want to ride spit-shined horses into battle while we glisten and glare as our armies rides through wonderland forest with beautiful song birds sounding from the bright green poofy trees, our war cry sounding "save the forest", "save the animals"... our conquest is to bring the message of peace and love to our enemies that we may dine together at the giant tea party. *POOF*... ohh thank god i awoke from that dream, for a minute i thought the next installment of AOE was going to be fruity ... .......
@ Com_Raven ~ My gamertag is EmjeR.
I read on AoMh that you are staff on HG, well you should have noticed that there are mostly only negative reactions.
btw that promotion for 0 AD was more like a reaction on the post of Darkstar about that no game worth having is free...
And btw the graphics of 0 AD are far from bad, even in alpha state
Robot did her best on making good graphics and a nice grapic engine. and i'm sure they put much efford in it. the only problem is that they had the wrong ideas, the wrong concept.
I don't say this game is the badest as a game. It only shouldn't have got the name Ago of Empires. because it doesn't fit in the series of realistic looking strategy games. As an online game no-life time-filling like FarmVille it would do fine.
and btw. about the premium content. it sounds like you just have to pay enough to win. i bet the premium contents mean better units/buildings/upgrades. and if you don't buy, you'll never be able to compete the buying people. which means less people are willing to play because they rather play a fun free game. its a theory, but it would be at the edge..
@Emjer
Man I just hope premium content wont be like that... who pays get better stuff and own the free players...
That is again an aweful lot of assumption going on there with regards to the cash store; I wonder where the foundation for it is?
The Premium Content was explained Raven.. And I´m happy now that no Premium Content will make the game Unbalanced ;) i wonder as well where the foundation for it is lol

I am just really desperate for RE/Microsoft to keep the PvP separate from home city leveling/quests. Or maybe not even separate - just allow for a ladder system where people can play each other and home cities are not involved - a competitive PvP environment with a large PvE fanbase - similar to WoW and many other games, except remove the grind.
This is the single one thing I look for in games these days. The accessibility of PvP and how dependent PvP is on PvE play (or PvP grind to get experience/skills/equipment).
