64 Player Tournament
This is the official thread for the 64 player Hero Academy Tournament. Here is where the rules will be posted, along with the matchups, and results of the tournament will be discussed. I’ll need full cooperation from all participants in order to make the tournament run smoothly, it’ll be a bit chaotic since there is no easy way to mass communicate with every one of you. You’ll have to keep up to date with the thread in order to know about any developments in the tournament. Let’s get started then.
I tried organizing the matchups as best I could, but there are only one or two members with time zones that will drastically change the match, so the matchups are basically random. I thought about doing it based on skill, but many entrants are new, and I thought that since the tournament will be after the update everyone might as well define themselves here. Check below for information that is crucial to everyone participating. Please read it completely (I know it’s a lot, but this will lower the number of disputes by having definite rules).
DATE OF FIRST ROUND:
Wednesday, February 29, 2012
LENGTH OF ROUNDS:
Each round will last up to ten days, if all matches are finished before the ten day period then the next round will commence at that time. Each day, BOTH players are required to make at least 3 moves. If your opponent is not making his minimum required moves some days, but the match is still done before the ten day time span, it is okay. If the match isn’t finished by the end of the ten days, I am allowed to make a decision as to who the winner would be based on the current state of the board and items/units in hand. This decision will not be in any way disputed without good cause, or the player disputing will be banned from further tournaments hosted by yours truly. To avoid this, you might wish to schedule a “cram session” with your opponent on the last day in the event that you are not yet finished with the match.
MEMBERSHIP IN HERO ACADEMY LEAGUE:
You must be a member of the HA league before the start of the tournament. If you aren’t, you will be disqualified. Here are steps to join if you haven’t yet- (1) go to robotentertainmentfans.com; (2) sign up for the web site; (3) pick a username that matches your in-game name precisely; (4) click on the Hero Academy icon on the left; (5) click on League; (6) click on request membership; (7) you will be added in less than 24 hours. Every tournament match will need to be posted in the league after completion. For more information on how to do this, visit the “New Members Start Here” and “Information and Rules” forums over at robotentertainmentfans.com.
CODE OF CONDUCT:
Excessive use of profanity against another player, posting pictures of (incomplete) matches on the forums or other public websites, and not playing the minimum required moves per day may result in disqualification. This is to ensure that the tournament moves smoothly along and all players have a fun time. Discussing a match in progress is also forbidden, if you are caught talking about a match that hasn’t been finished it will be considered consulting for help and therefore cheating. If you do not complete your minimum move requirements per day and the match is far from over by the end of the ten days, you will be subject to disqualification if your opponent has sufficient proof.
PRIZES:
First place winner will receive a Hero Academy T-Shirt, along with a $15 iTunes gift card. Runner up will receive a Hero Academy T-Shirt as well.
LEAGAL DISCLAIMER:
I am not a part of Robot Entertainment, and due to that fact there are possible unknowns that may affect the tournament. Server maintenance, updates, and many other things are possibilities that might cause changes in the rules or time needed for a specific round. I am not to be held responsible for any such occurrences, and I will handle it to the best of my abilities. In addition to this, the prizes will be personally provided by me, and I will need access to shipping information in the event that you win.
DECIDING WHO GOES FIRST:
First turn is regarded by most as an advantage. To deal with this in a fair way, each player will send me a number between 1 and 100 every round. Each round I’ll have a randomly generated number, and the player that guesses the closest will invite his/her opponent (and thus move first). If one player does not send me a number, the other player automatically goes first. If neither player sends a number, I will decide who goes first. This must be done at least a day in advance.
WHAT TEAMS CAN YOU USE?
When the tournament begins, there will be Council, Dark Elves, and Dwarves. You can use any of these teams that you wish, and you do not have to stick with one team throughout the entire tournament. In the event that more teams are released while the tournament is still going on, they will become playable a week after release.

These are the matchups. If you are involved in the tournament, please read all of the rules, observe who your opponent will be for round one, and send me a message with a number between one and one hundred so that I can let you know who will be moving first. Remember, the tournament doesn’t start until the 29th, so any matches till then won’t count towards the tournament (though I advise against matches against your opponent until then as they may take screenshots and attempt to use it as proof in the tournament). Good luck to everyone, and I can’t wait to get things started =] if your opponent doesn't accept the invite within a few hours on the first day of the tournament, please message me and I will try my best to get a reserve player. If there is not one available, you will be matched with another player who has a no-show opponent, and if there is only one you will move on to the next round for lack of another option.
After each match, the winner must take a screenshot of the victory and email it to: reegan777@yahoo.com
I don't see that it would be a problem as long as there is a secondary judge to rule on a match discrepency and a tertiary judge in the instance there is a conflict between the primary and secondary judges.
*whimper*
I wanna play :[
I don't think it will be a problem. It does, however, necessitate a bit more transperancy in how things like pairings are to be determined. I'm not sure why Reegan didn't just randomly "seed" everyone 1-64 creating a totally deterministic bracket. Maybe he did do that in which cast he should post the seeding information. As is Reegan "could" do something like ensure that he doesn't have to play, for isntance, highly ranked league members in early rounds. I doubt he would do something like that, but he could and we should try to avoid that being possible.
Lol don't worry you guys, I'm just playing for fun since I didn't get into the last tourney. I'm not that great of a player so I won't make it too far :p if by some off chance I do win, the prizes will go to the 2nd and 3rd place. Though I'm in the same quadrant as the number one league player, so I won't make it past round two :p
Can't edit my post still >.> in the bracket it's MLKeener vs. GreatGonzales then below them it's me vs. Orphansmith. If I do beat Orphansmith, I'll likely be going against number 2 (I believe) in the league.
You might want to seek out a website that displays single elimination tournaments for you and whoever is playing.
Something like http://leagator.com/ or http://challonge.com/ (but free instead, unlike the latter).
I'll look into it tomorrow, about to crash for tonight. I had tried finding an app for listing tournament, but none held 64 players
Okay, I made this, which we can use for the tournament: http://bit.ly/x2ti7B
One week now guys! Narziss was kind enough to give us a spot to look at the bracket, so I'll go edit it tonight or tomorrow with the way the bracket really looks so you guys can check it out. I've been busy lately, but I'll get to it soon :p
Choosing numbers between 1-100 is a flawed way of generating a random first player. Numbers closer to 50 have a better chance of winning. A player who only chooses 50 or 51 each round will start first more often than a player who uses any other strategy. (Also, smart players will keep picking 50 or 51 and just tying with each other all the time).
Since you're using a random roll each time in the first place, just roll 1-2 to pick a starter.
Hamlet you're giving away my goods!
I have to agree, the picking a number system seems a bit weird. I'm not sure if it's a way to garner some sense of trust from people that you aren't rigging it. Really though, it'd be an easier procress for yourself and others if it just came down to you rolling a number, or flipping a coin and deciding it that way.
Just flip a coin for odd or even. If it is heads, it is even, if it is tails, it is odd. And which ever side it lands on, then all odd or even numbered players play first. Solved.

Yeah, it was basically so that if someone doesn't get first I'd be able to post the number that I chose as proof, but if everyone's fine with me just flipping a coin it'd be a lot easier. Just don't want anyone complaining if they aren't first and thinking that I just rather their opponent or something.
Well, It's probably too late, but wasn't there discussion on having player 1 either skip one AP on the first turn? That way, if you win the "coin flip" you can choose to go first or second?
Of course, it's probably too late this time.

+1, I think the first turn advantage is huge.
For some reason my computer isn't letting me post on the forums, and I don't have much time to get on my iPod touch to do it, but don't think I've forgotten about the tournament. By Monday night/Tuesday morning I'll post a list of who's going first. I'll just flip a coin since I haven't received a majority of the numbers anyway. I agree the first turn issue should be addressed, but it's just something that can't be changed for the first round. After the first round, I'll have a vote about whether or not we should fix it somehow. Thanks to everyone that signed up, stay posted!
So... Is the list coming soon? :)
I hope so.
Is there a backup person who is in charge or doing the coin flipping? I mean, I could easily do it on www.random.org . I'm trying to see if there's a way to track the numbers without paying for them.
Why not just use the order in which you posted the names? Random enough for me, and I'm listed second on it.
I mean, I'm fine with that. Just a friendly tournament with no buy-in...just wish we'd have designated people who were backups so people don't cry foul.

Guys it isn't even 1 am on the east coast yet. Let's give the guy a while to make a post before we get antsy/skip the actual coin flip. If he hasn't posted by like, mid afternoon then we can worry about what to do.
Wonder what happened. He put a lot of work into it, just to drop the ball. Hope all is well.
This is still happening right? Hey Tabby_nat, we're matched up so you wanna go for it? I don't mind if I go second - send me an invite. My player name is the same as my forum name - superarkanoid.
I don't know! Should we? Should we not??
I'm so confused. T_T

+1, I'm also listed second against my opponent, and I'm totally down with just going with the order that the names were posted. In other words, if your number is odd, you initiate the challenge and play first; if your number is even, you wait for the challenge. How does that sound?
I know he suddenly got really busy and, at least for some period of time, had computer-access issues. That said, the day isnt over, lets hope the matchups are coming soon. If he is AFK today, discuss it tonight.

Wait so you are running the tournament but also competeing in it?
