Robot Football Fanatics
Before the memory of the 2009 NFL season fades into our cluttered mental rolodex and we begin looking forward to crowning of the next Super Bowl Champs (congrats to the New Orleans Saints and all of their fans by the way); what better time to talk about our first Robot Fantasy Football League.
A handful of us have been getting together every season for that past 8 years or more just to prove to ourselves that “Yes we can put together a better team than Jerry Jones!” Yeah I know it’s a little different set of circumstances, but hey its fantasy right? Go Cowboys!
We typically form two leagues every year consisting of 8 to 12 players per league. Our “Big League” is made up of the more seriously competitive (slightly touched) players; the stakes are a little higher meaning that the trash talk is a little heavier, meaner but always appreciated (fat mommy/spouse jokes excluded) . For those that are just beginning or say that they play “just for the fun of it” (scared little girls) we have our “Little League”. Those that play in this League are a little more civil and have a good grasp of the Golden Rule. The names Big and Little began as away to taunt players in the Little League in an effort to grow the winners pot and it just stuck.
What is the best part of fantasy football? More than the trophies?

Draft day of course! I say that only because I haven’t won anything close to money in quite some time so naturally I’m going to lie and say it is better than winning. Now that I think about it I haven’t won since 2004, wow I suck! And that was in the Little League? Oh the shame. But yes draft day is the day that everyone gets stoked about and the office is abuzz for two weeks prior to the draft. It’s not uncommon to find a few football geeks, like myself, huddled in front of the TV in the Biergarten (that’s right we drink beer during work) watching ESPN, flipping through our various Draft Day Guides and discussing our options on who we are hoping to take with our first pick. Being the Commissioner I’ve got to find some way to rig this thing to where I end up with the first pick this year. What’s the point of having power if you can’t abuse it right?
At any rate here are the results of our first Robot Entertainment Fantasy Football Leagues. This was the year of the Newbie as 4 of the 6 places were taken by first time players.

Little League
3rd Duncan Stanley (Newbie)
2nd Dion Hopkins (Newbie)
1st Joe Gillum (Newbie)
Big League
3rd Paul Slusser (Veteran and two-time Champ)
2nd Rob Walden (Newbie)
1st Gene Kohler (Veteran of many hard fought seasons and 1st time Champ)
So Congrats to them all…may their success be short lived. Not that I’m bitter or hold any ill will towards my fellow competitors. Daddy just needs to find a way to bring home the Trophy!
We have already formed up for this coming season so expect more posts on what’s going on with the Football Fanatics.
