Monster Theme (Part 1)!
Hey all.. Gene here. I have the priviledge of kicking off the Robot ArtBlog's Theme... Monsters!... hope you enjoy...
I read the Wheel of Time Series of Fantasy novels by Robert Jordan during my college years. Ok... I made it to Book 5 or 6 of the series... I luv’d the characters, the world, the intricate detail, etc that Robert created but the books are just soooo looong winded. I eventually threw in the towel BUT... I found the world, characters, creatures, and the lore very artistically inspiring and interesting. One of the main creatures that always stuck in my noggin were the Shadowspawn's Trollocs. These creatures made up the bulk of the Shadowspawn's mainline infantry type units. Animal DNA magically fused with human... Trollocs were very cool creatures to read about and inspired me to create my own versions while in college and here today.
This Trolloc would be Man fused with Ram. A lower level mix version... more Beast than Man... this creature cares little (or even fathoms) rank adornment, vanity items, braids, etc etc... his armor is picked up from the victims it slays... and even then a higher ranking\ higher intelligence Trolloc has to put it on for him.
All this creature knows is torment creating a furiosity to kill.
Hope you enjoy the Lineart and Color versions! The color version was inspired by the art style of the game Borderlands. This style naturally matches my own graphic style. Once I started playing the game I immediately was fired up to put some color, with heavy black outline, on my entry into this Robot ArtBlog’s Theme.
Btw... my son is an aspiring video game artist. His feedback on this Trolloc was a great help... his best recommendation being the flies you see buzzing around this Trolloc. This is the perfect touch in implying that this guy has a nasty animal~like stench about him. Thanks Jake!

wow impressive artwork!!
I love the flies buzzing around, almost gives a smell to the art and they certainly set the mood as a foul creature.
good luck to your son!
That would be a great theme to do on Borderlands. Maybe you could do a Final Fantasy 13 next? Really great style to it! Haven't played Borderlands yet but when I see some pics it looks the same.
@Sean yeah now that I think about it, that artwork almost looks like its from the game. Its very similar and Final Fantasy would be cool. And the flies are a nice addition. Great piece of artwork! I look forward to future installments on this theme.
Great to see new updates!
Great pic.
Awesome ArtWork im following Game Design ;)
keep it coming with updates it tell us that you are focus on your community :)
fantastic artwork! How long did it take to make it?
Really great artwork and style used.
@Sean the artwork makes me remember the skags and skagzilla.
Looks like age of mytholgy 2 only you went to medevil age like you did with aoe2 or your just doing it for fun...
anyway if this is something from the next game it looks a little like Warcraft....
Hey all... thanks for the feedback\comments!
@Rhompus- Thank you! Foul would be the perrrrfect adjective to describe the aura\ vibe the flies bring to this illustration. My son can use all the luck he can get... this is certainly a competitive field.
@Sean- FF 13 would indeed be a great Theme... I'm sure we'll kick it around the Art table when we are deciding on our next round of Art.
@Starz- Thanks for the compliments. If this Trolloc looks like he could be in Borderlands... mission accomplished! I don't know how many times I almost died... or did... just because I was staring at a piece of art within Borderlands:)
@Spango- Thank you... we try to put together a Theme to share with you all every 3~ish months or so. Its alot of fun to break away and work on our own Art (outside of what we do by day). This Blog serves as a great platform to motivate me to create illustrations that I otherwise may not find the time to do.
@JohnnyPhoenix- Thanks! Robot DEFINITELY cares about our community! Without you all... well... there isn't a Robot
@bob- Thank you... from start to finish I would say this Trolloc took me about 20 hours give or take. First I will decide on an idea then surf the internet looking for photo reference to nail the general pose... this is prob the step I dislike the most... I want to get to drawing! But having a good solid pose referenced saves a great deal of time. I will then take the photo into photoshop using the "liquify" filter to quickly exaggerate and hash out the general form of the character. Now the fun begins... I start laying in rough details... from there I execute the Line Art pass... then move onto Color.
@Yoshi- Thanks alot! I can see this guy as Skag~ish :)
@Truit- This illustration is in no way, shape, or form indicative of the titles we are currently working on. Our Art Blog Themes are totally independent ideas selected by the Art Staff. These Themes provide us a fun, creative outlet to execute any style or genre we choose to work with. Keeping our recreation art independent of our titles actually keeps us fresh for what really matters... getting Robot's games done so that we can get them in your mitts! :)
Thank you all for your comments!
gene are you guys just starting a game or almost done with one at least tell me that or what game type you dont post anything in your projects if you cant tell me anything then thats fine i understand....
I would LOVE to see a Wheel of Time RTS game! I realize that Gene said these projects aren't intended to leak information or reflect projects, but I'd still be happy with an ESO/Robot Entertainment style Wheel of Time game. Keep up the good work. I'm excited for the next game you guys are going to pump out. :)

Thank you for another essential article. Where else could anyone get that kind of information in such a complete way of writing? I have a presentation incoming week, and I am on the lookout for such information.
