GI Joe (Part 5)
Even though I’m more of a Transformers and He-man fan, the GI Joe theme seemed like fun. It took me a good while to actually decide what to create. When I stumbled upon a drawing app for my iPhone, Autodesk Sketchbook Mobile, I thought it would be a fun challenge to create my entry entirely on my phone. I’ve always been a fan of the Bruce Timm style Batman and Justice League cartoons, so what I create would attempt to put a GI Joe character into that style. Lastly, I needed a character with some color so Scarlett fit the bill.
Here’s a few work in progress shots. I started by creating a rough sketch of the pose on my phone. Then I grayed out the sketch and on a new layer I traced over it with a weighted brush. I made the lines around the face bolder to draw the viewers eyes to that point. I made the pose a little more playful by giving her a finger pistol. The color was a bit of a challenge, because even though I draw pretty often, I never color anything.

Well, I hope you like it. And stay tuned for more G. I. Joe action!

Hey monsterBlues
Looking sweet dude! How long did that take for you to do that on your IPhone? Also how many artiest are working at RE?
You guys are working with the GI Joe property?! Goooooo. :)
Looking great. Didn't think autodesk had an app on the IPhone. What do ya know. :)
Can't wait to see more.
I understand this isn't a blog about this question but everyone keeps asking for age of empires 4 who is taking over the franchise and is there going to be any kind of announcement to stop all these rumors? It was one of the best RTS pc games of all time people are craving more.
Nice drawing man keep it going
Thanks for the comments! Even though I can't talk about what we are working on, it's fun to show off some art work. Normally we artists need to wait for the project to hit store shelves before we can show any work.
@Sean, this took around 6 hours. Half for the sketch and line work, then the other half for the coloring. Seems like a long time to be glued to the phone, but I worked in about 15 minute increments. There are 14 of us on the art staff at Robot. You can see our ugly mugs in the very first blog post: http://www.robotentertainment.com/Blogs/Detail/Art-BotWelcome
@Hemby, every month we pick a theme for the blog as an artistic outlet. BTW, please feel free to comment with a theme idea you'd like us to work on.
@Rigormortus, Age of Empires is a great game. However, I'm not at liberty to discuss our current endeavors at Robot.
Great that the Art central is still updating...
but how about the others???
Hey monsterBlues, love the artwork.
If the programmers are the backbone and the designers are the brain of any game project, the artists are its lifeblood, you're the guys that keep the players sucked into whatever universe you're conveying. It seems like Robot Entertainment is blessed with some good lifeblood then. ;)
In regards to themes, I'd like to see you guys revisit the Age of Empires concept art seen in the Game Manual for AoE 1. You guys have some fantastic art in there, I love how it's sketched out, perhaps pursuing that?
Theme: Ancient Empires!
Thanks!
Thought of something you guys might be interested in maybe Transformers 1 or 2 and maybe Civil War age.
Good research work keep it up.
